    The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels, and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country covering 58,321 miles of interstate, primary, secondary and frontage roads. VDOT has about 7,500 employees making it one of the largest state agencies in Virginia delivering a program that exceeds $5 Billion.

    The Salem District maintains more than 9,200 miles of roads in southwestern Virginia in the counties of:

    Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke. The district serves more than 650,000 citizens in these counties and the 14 cities and towns in its boundaries.


    The Christiansburg Regional Shop is looking for an Equipment Repair Technician to join our team. The qualified candidate will diagnose, repair, inspect and maintain motorized and mechanical equipment related to construction, highway maintenance, grounds, and automotive equipment of all types and in varied locations.

    Core Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    Performing Virginia State Inspections

    Diagnosis and Repair by using electronic testing equipment, service and equipment repair manuals and on-line resources

    Information Processing and Paperwork by preparing, processing, and maintaining required maintenance and repair documentation.

    Performing preventative maintenance on vehicles, equipment or assets and make repairs as needed

    Designing, fabricating, modifying, and welding components to make necessary repairs

    Prepare equipment for emergency operations and make equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations.

    Performing repairs and overhauls to all types of automobiles, equipment and tools including engines, transmissions, electrical and computer systems, etc.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
    • Ability to operate various types of light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Ability to obtain Virginia State Inspection License within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
    • Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations.
    • Ability to read, comprehend service and equipment repair manuals, gauges and testing devices.
    • Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.
    • Safety shoes required.
    • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
    • Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
    • Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair, maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
    • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.

    Additional Considerations

    • A combination of training, experience, or education in Automative Repair, Maintenance or related field desired.
    • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
    • Experience using cutting and welding equipment.
    • Virginia State Inspection License - Class A
    • Experience repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive and construction equipment.

    • Federal DOT pre-employment physical

    Safety shoes and other personal protective equipment (PPE) required in performance of job duties.

    This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.

    Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

    VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
