Evening - 08 Hour (United States of America)

Every patient interaction depends on the quiet readiness of the equipment behind the scenes. As an Equipment Tech, you play a vital role in keeping care moving safely and seamlessly by ensuring essential patient equipment is clean, available, and ready exactly when clinicians need it most.

In this hands-on role, you support daily hospital operations by cleaning, disinfecting, staging, and distributing patient care equipment across inpatient units, ICUs, the Emergency Department, and other clinical areas at Stanford Health Care's Palo Alto campus. You'll work onsite as an individual contributor, partnering closely with clinical teams to maintain equipment availability, accuracy, and safety while following infection prevention, privacy, and service standards.

  • Clean, track, store, and distribute patient care equipment to meet daily and fluctuating clinical demand

  • Maintain organized equipment rooms, pars, and workflows to support efficient hospital operations

  • Identify non-functional equipment, initiate work orders, and support repair coordination

  • Use approved systems to document requests, chain of custody, and daily job flows

  • Communicate professionally with staff, patients, and visitors in a fast-paced healthcare environment

  • Periodically assist with Specimen transport as needed

A Brief Overview

Under the direction of the Supervisor and/or the Manager of the Patient Transport and Patient Equipment Management Systems (PEMS), the Equipment Tech supports the department by supporting the cleaning, disinfection, pick-up, delivery and staging of patient care equipment across inpatient nursing units, intensive care units (ICU), the Emergency Department (ED), and other areas. This role adheres to Stanford Health Care (SHC) policies, the Joint Commission (TJC), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), infection-prevention standards, and C-I-CARE to ensure safe operations, patient care delivery and service excellence.

What you will do

  • Follow SHC safety guidelines, dress code, badge policies, and infection‑prevention practices; uphold HIPAA and C‑I‑CARE.
  • Use manufacturer‑recommended cleaning procedures and SHC‑approved disinfectants for all assigned equipment.
  • Clean, pick up, distribute, store, and stage routine inventory and patient‑care equipment to ensure availability for clinical teams.
  • Maintain and organize equipment storage areas, PEMS workspaces, and soiled utility rooms; coordinate pickups as needed.
  • Maintain department equipment pars in accordance with SHC guidelines.
  • Identify non‑functional equipment; apply red tags, initiate work orders, and coordinate repairs.
  • Search inpatient units and hospital areas for missing or unit‑specific equipment and return items to proper locations.
  • Complete daily job flows, standard work, and required documentation accurately and on time.
  • Use SHC‑approved software, hardware, and workflows to receive, prioritize, track, and close service requests within expected timelines.
  • Maintain chain of custody by verifying patient information, scanning barcodes when applicable, logging transfers, and completing required hand‑offs.
  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and respectfully with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Respond promptly to customer service concerns and escalate issues to department leadership when appropriate.
  • Transport of specimens, as needed basis
  • Support unit, department, and hospital operational goals.
  • Observe appropriate use of breaks and personal devices per policy; always maintain confidentiality and data integrity.
  • Perform additional transport and operational duties as assigned to support patient care and hospital operations.

Education Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required

Experience Qualifications

  • 0 - 6 months as a PEMS Technician or comparable experience in equipment handling, patient transport, or logistics

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Effective English communication skills, including accurate reading, writing, and documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and sound judgment.
  • Basic data entry skills and the ability to generate simple reports using department systems.
  • Understanding of chain of custody requirements and ability to follow related procedures consistently.

Licenses and Certifications

  • CADL - California Drivers License - Valid And In State .

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $29.47 - $37.57 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
