    Bargaining Unit: EA

    Rate of Pay: $35.52/hour + DOE (Base Rate of $33.83 include 5% temporary rate)

    Summary
    Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the ER Tech/Unit Clerk performs a combination of direct patient care, clinical procedures, and unit-based operational support activities to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality care across the Emergency Department, Medical-Surgical Unit, and Outpatient Infusion in a rural hospital setting.

    This role is a key member of the care team, supporting clinical throughput, assisting with procedures, facilitating transfers, and helping maintain essential department operations.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    Direct Patient Care & Clinical Support
    • Performs basic patient care activities within scope:
      • Vital signs, patient rounding, transport, ambulation assistance
      • Assists with activities of daily living (ADLs)
    • Assists providers and nurses with patient care and procedures
    • Performs 12-lead EKGs per provider order and department protocols
    • Performs point-of-care testing in accordance with hospital policy and competency validation
    • Performs specimen collection, handling, and transport to laboratory
    • Performs phlebotomy in accordance with hospital policy, state scope, and competency validation
    • Administers limited intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SQ) medications such as vaccines (e.g., tetanus) in accordance with hospital policy, state scope, and competency validation
    • Assists with wound care, irrigation, and dressing changes
    • Applies and removes splints and orthopedic devices per provider order
    • Applies pre-fabricated orthotics and immobilization devices ensuring proper fit
    • Provides patient education (e.g., crutch use, splint care)
    • Immediately reports changes in patient condition to RN/provider
    • Documents all care in the electronic health record in a timely and legally appropriate manner
    Orthopedic & Procedural Competency
    • Performs casting and splinting using approved techniques (upon certification)
    • Assists with fracture stabilization and orthopedic procedures
    • Maintains competency in splinting, immobilization, and device application
    • Participates in ongoing skills validation and competency assessment
    Patient Flow & Throughput
    • Assists with admissions, discharges, and transfers
    • Initiates and coordinates patient transfers:
      • Prepares required documentation
      • Communicates with EMS/dispatch and receiving facilities
    • Transports patients within the department and to ancillary services
    • Assists with maintaining readiness for incoming patients (room turnover, stocking)
    Unit Clerk & Operational Support
    • Answers phones and facilitates communication with providers, EMS, and outside facilities
    • Supports front desk/registration workflow as needed
    • Manages Outpatient Infusion (IV therapy) workqueue, including:
      • Verifies orders are placed by a credentialed provider
      • Coordinates with Authorization team to ensure prior authorization completion
      • Coordinates with Pharmacy to confirm medication approval for IVCH administration and availability
      • Schedules patients in coordination with patient availability and department resources
    • Assists leadership with:
      • Reports, audits, and data tracking
    • Department projects and process improvement efforts
    • Maintains and updates:
      • Department phone lists and resource directories
      • Orders and stocks medical and office supplies
    • Retrieves, sorts, and distributes department mail
    • Assists with charge entry and ensures accuracy of ED charges
    Environment of Care & Safety
    • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized patient care environment
    • Stocks linens, supplies, and equipment
    • Enters work orders for equipment repair/maintenance
    • Participates in event reporting and safety initiatives
    • Demonstrates appropriate infection prevention practices
    Teamwork & Professional Development
    • Functions as an effective and flexible team member in a rural ED environment
    • Anticipates needs of nurses, providers, and patients
    • Participates in:
      • Department meetings
      • Skills days and competency training
    • Seeks opportunities to expand clinical and operational skills
    • Supports departmental goals, quality initiatives, and system values, including:
      • Supports department quality improvement initiatives
      • Assists with data collection, audits, and process improvement efforts

    Minimum Education/Experience

    Required Licenses/Certifications
    Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
    • Upon hire
    BLS: Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS certification).
    • Within 3 months of hire into job
    American Alliance of Orthopaedic Executives (AAOE) Casting and Splinting Certificate
    • Within 3 months of hire into job
    • American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP) certification will also satisfy this requirement
    Other Experience/Qualifications
    Required:
    • One of the following upon hire:
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) 1 or higher OR Certified/Registered Medical Assistant (CCMA/RMA)
    Preferred:
    • 6–12 months healthcare experience
