Partner / Senior Counsel: Trusts & Estates Practice

A premier, full-service Mid-Atlantic law firm is seeking an experienced Trusts & Estates Partner (or Senior Counsel on a Partner track) to join its flagship New York City office.
This role is ideal for a mid-to-senior level partner looking to serve an established institutional client base while expanding their own practice in a collaborative, cross-functional environment. You will advise high-net-worth individuals, multi-generational families, closely held business owners, and fiduciaries on sophisticated estate planning, wealth transfer, tax mitigation, and asset protection strategies.
Key Details
- Location: New York City (Midtown Manhattan) / Hybrid arrangement available.
- Position Level: Partner / Senior Counsel.
- Base Compensation: $250,000 – $400,000+ USD (Commensurate with experience and portable business).
- Incentive Structure: Generous origination credit (e.g., 15%+ from dollar one on self-generated business) plus performance incentives.
Key Responsibilities
- Advanced Estate & Wealth Planning: Design and execute complex, tax-efficient estate plans involving multi-generational wealth transfers, lifetime trusts, family business succession, and philanthropic gifting.
- High-Net-Worth Advisory: Serve as a trusted advisor to high-net-worth clients navigating sensitive family dynamics, blended family considerations, special needs trusts, and elder law planning.
- Cross-Practice Collaboration: Partner with the firm’s Commercial Real Estate, Corporate/Business, Litigation, and Government Relations practices to deliver holistic solutions to shared clients.
- Estate & Trust Administration: Oversee complex probate proceedings, estate accountings, fiduciary administration, and dispute resolution where necessary.
- Practice Development: Build and grow your personal book of business over time with full administrative, marketing, and cross-selling support from the firm.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education & Bar: J.D. from an accredited law school; active admission to the New York State Bar in good standing. (LL.M. in Taxation preferred but not required).
- Experience: 7–10+ years of focused experience in sophisticated trusts and estates law, tax-intensive planning, and asset protection.
- Book of Business: A portable book of business is advantageous/preferred, but attorneys with strong origination potential or a desire to step into an institutional client pipeline are encouraged to apply.
- Technical & Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional drafting ability, strong tax law background, and the empathy and presence required when advising clients on personal family matters.
