Overview

ABM is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical HVAC & Electrical Lighting Estimator to support our sales and operations teams. This role is critical in developing accurate, competitive, and timely cost estimates for HVAC systems and electrical lighting projects. The Estimator will collaborate closely with sales, project management, and field teams to ensure proposals align with customer needs, company standards, and profitability goals.

Responsibilities

Estimating & Proposal Development

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for HVAC and electrical lighting projects, including equipment, materials, labor, subcontractors, and permits. 
  • Establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with vendors and contractors.
  • Analyze blueprints, specifications, and site conditions to determine project scope and requirements. 
  • Develop accurate takeoffs and pricing models using estimating software and internal tools. 
  • Create professional proposals, scopes of work, and bid packages for customers. 
  • Ensure estimates align with company pricing strategies, margin targets, and risk profiles. 

Sales Support

  • Partner with sales teams to develop competitive bids and value-engineered solutions. 
  • Participate in customer meetings, site walks, and pre-bid conferences as needed. 
  • Provide technical insight and pricing guidance during the sales process. 
  • Assist in responding to RFPs, RFQs, and customer inquiries. 
  • Support sales forecasting by maintaining an active pipeline of estimates and opportunities. 

Operations Collaboration

  • Work closely with operations and project managers to validate assumptions, labor rates, and execution strategies. 
  • Ensure smooth handoff of awarded projects, including detailed estimate breakdowns and scope clarification. 
  • Assist with job costing, change orders, and post-project analysis to improve future estimates. 
  • Help identify cost-saving opportunities and process improvements. 

Technical & Analytical Duties

  • Review drawings, specifications, and contract documents for accuracy and completeness. 
  • Stay current on HVAC systems, lighting technologies (including LED and controls), and industry trends. 
  • Evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotes to ensure competitiveness and compliance. 
  • Maintain and update cost databases, labor units, and pricing benchmarks. 

Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure all estimates comply with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company policies. 
  • Adhere to safety standards and promote a culture of safety in all estimating practices. 
  • Maintain documentation and audit trails for all estimates and revisions. 

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience). 
  • 3–7+ years of estimating experience in HVAC, electrical, or mechanical contracting. 
  • Experience with commercial and/or industrial projects preferred. 

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, electrical lighting, and controls. 
  • Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, Trimble, Accubid, or similar). 
  • Excellent analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications. 
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across sales and operations teams. 
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and time management abilities. 
  • Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
