Excavating Foreman

Who we are:

The Horst Group consists of 5 separate entities, Horst Insurance, Horst Property Management, Horst Cottages, Horst Excavating and Horst Construction. This position will work solely for Horst Excavating.


Horst Excavating has been in business for over 60 years. Our award-winning team's vision is to continually expand our site development business through customer-centered quality work. For us, it is more than just earthwork. Based out of Lancaster, PA most of our projects are within a 75 mile radius of the main office, however we do provide commercial excavating services throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. The markets we serve include senior living, education, industrial, manufacturing, religious, performing arts, and various other commercial endeavors.

Job Expectations:

Manage excavation projects from start to finish. Responsible to ensure assignments are performed safely and efficiently; to assign and inspect work, order materials, and track time and materials utilized. As an Excavating Foreman, you'll be expected to:

  • Schedules manpower and equipment.
  • Orders materials and then reviews and checks accuracy of invoices and tickets.
  • Performs site layout work.
  • Works with the Project Manager to develop schedules.
  • Coordinates repair and maintenance of equipment with the shop.
  • Operates equipment when needed.
  • Conducts and attends weekly site safety meetings. Responsible for overall work site safety management.
  • Reviews and approves employee time cards for project activities.
  • Monitors quality of workmanship on jobsite.
  • Responsible to document as-built conditions on a record set of as-built drawings as changes occur.
  • Complies with municipality requirements, specifications, safety standards and company policies.
  • Participates in completing monthly projection reports.
  • Responsible for condition and accounting of tools on the job site.
  • Delegates appropriate tasks and responsibilities to field staff.
  • Investigates site conditions.
  • Prepares Daily Log Reports, Job Site Managers Weekly Report, O.S. Reports, etc.

Position Requirements:

  • Requires Basic academic education (high school diploma or equivalent). Vocational training preferred.
  • Must be able to read, write, understand and communicate effectively in English.
  • Must have at least 2 years prior experience in the excavating industry. Equipment operation or pipe laying experience a plus.
  • Must be able to read blueprints and project specifications.
  • Must have ability to apply basic shop mathematics.
  • Basic skill level in use of measuring instruments and simple tools required.
  • A current valid driver's license is required.
  • Will be required to obtain all clearances required to work on school projects, including but not limited to the Pennsylvania and Federal criminal history records, fingerprint submission, Act 34 background check, and Act 151 child abuse clearances.
