Exceptional Children''s Teacher Job Description

Position Summary

The Exceptional Children''s (EC) Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), North Carolina Policies Governing Services for Children with Disabilities, and school policies. The EC Teacher collaborates with general education teachers, families, and related service providers to ensure students receive high-quality instruction and services that promote academic, behavioral, social, and functional success.

Qualifications

• Bachelor''s degree in Special Education or related field.

• Valid North Carolina Special Education teaching license (or eligibility).

• Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction & Student Support

• Provide specialized instruction aligned with students'' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

• Develop and implement evidence-based instructional strategies and accommodations.

• Differentiate instruction to meet individual student needs.

• Progress monitor student performance and adjust instruction accordingly.

• Support students in inclusion, resource, or separate settings as assigned.

• Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and positive behavior supports.

IEP & Compliance

• Develop compliant IEPs, including Present Levels, goals, accommodations, and transition plans as applicable.

• Schedule and facilitate IEP meetings.

• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in ECATS.

• Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, and state regulations.

• Complete reevaluations and annual reviews within required timelines.

• Collect and maintain progress monitoring data.

Collaboration

• Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive practices.

• Participate in co-planning and co-teaching when appropriate.

• Work with related service providers including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, counselors, and behavior specialists.

• Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress.

• Participate in MTSS and problem-solving meetings.

Professional Responsibilities

• Attend required staff meetings, professional development, and EC meetings.

• Maintain confidentiality of student records.

• Stay current on special education laws, best practices, and district initiatives.

• Support school-wide initiatives and maintain positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
