Our Mission

Empowering those we touch to live and develop.

The Role

As Executive Director, you own the health of the whole community — resident care, team performance, regulatory compliance, and financial results. You'll direct day-to-day operations, build and develop the site team, keep relationships strong with residents and families, and make sure everything we do reflects Vitality's Mission and Values.

Upsala is licensed for 20 residents and includes a secured memory care setting, so this is a hands-on, know-every-resident-by-name kind of building.

This role suits someone who leads from the floor, not from the office. You'll solve problems as they surface, motivate a team through change, and set the tone for service excellence every single day.

What You'll Do

Operations & Compliance

  • Direct daily operations in line with federal, state, and local regulations governing assisted living.
  • Build deep working knowledge of state regulations, policies, and procedures — and make sure the building follows them.
  • Lead the survey process and own Plan of Correction completion with support from the local team and consultants.
  • Review all incident reports and confirm corrective actions land on time.
  • Keep resident administrative files current, complete, and compliant with state regulations.
  • Partner with Regional Consultants and site staff to identify resident needs and strengths, then build and implement support services plans.

People & Culture

  • Advocate for both team members and residents.
  • Partner with Regional HR to run the talent selection process using Vitality's HRIS resources.
  • Ensure timely, appropriate training for all site staff.
  • Give regular feedback, complete annual performance evaluations, and make sure your leaders complete theirs.
  • Support career growth through consistent development-focused conversations.
  • Build engagement through team-building, addressing concerns directly, and guiding the team through conflict resolution.
  • Drive strong customer and team member engagement survey results, with action plans where we fall short.
  • Articulate Vitality's Mission and Values in words and actions — and lead by example.

Census, Marketing & Community Relations

  • Meet or exceed budgeted revenue by maximizing occupancy and room rates using established systems and tools.
  • Monitor internal and external market conditions affecting occupancy; fill resident vacancies promptly.
  • Track inquiries and referrals, and develop consistent referral sources to minimize resident loss to competitors.
  • Place advertising with media sources as needed.
  • Build and maintain relationships with neighborhood agencies, organizations, and individuals that drive business.

Financial Stewardship

  • Monitor financial status, analyze budget variances, and initiate corrective action promptly to stay within approved budget.
  • Review invoices and purchases for accuracy and ensure prompt payment of location expenditures.
  • Assist in the collections process as needed.
  • Work with senior leadership to prepare annual operating and capital budgets.

Property & Environment

  • Work with on-site maintenance staff and the Regional Engineer to resolve issues and recommend repairs and replacements.
  • Maintain a working understanding of all aspects of property maintenance and ensure continuous high-quality curb appeal.
  • Partner with maintenance and executive staff to identify capital needs that protect the long-term financial and physical integrity of the property.
  • Plan, coordinate, and attend activities, special events, and educational opportunities alongside your team.

What You Bring

Required

  • Licensed Assisted Living Director (LALD) in the State of Minnesota, active and unencumbered.
  • Minimum 2–5 years of leadership experience in assisted living, senior living, long-term care, or a closely related field.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business, or a related field preferred.
  • Clear driving record in accordance with company policy.
  • Ability to meet all background study requirements of the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

Skills That Set You Up to Succeed

  • Strong verbal and written communication with staff, regional directors, residents, families, and visitors.
  • Dependable, organized, cooperative, and able to work independently.
  • Comfortable working through frequent interruptions and shifting tasks at a moment's notice.
  • Solid computer literacy, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and coding strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting residents with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia preferred.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of resident, employee, and organizational information.

In emergency or urgent situations, additional hours or temporary assistance with non-clinical support tasks may be assigned, consistent with training, licensure, and applicable laws.

The role is primarily indoors and requires frequent walking, sitting, and stair climbing, with occasional standing, stooping, bending, carrying, and lifting up to 10 lbs. You may encounter residents with behavioral needs and will follow Vitality's Safe Patient Handling Policy for any transfers or transport. Occasional local driving is required.
