    Primary Duties and

    Responsibilities:

    The Office of Campus Security is staffed by more than 40 officers with backgrounds in law enforcement, military service and higher education. Every officer holds state certification and maintains active training in CPR and first aid. We operate under the Office of the EVP for External Engagement & University Counsel. Our team patrols campus, responds to emergencies and works alongside students, faculty and staff to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone who calls Belmont home.

    The duties and responsibilities of the Captain include, but are not limited to:

    • Responsible for the management and supervision of the operations and personnel within their respective shifts or area of responsibility.
    • Create and implement plans needed to fulfill the mission, customer commitment, purpose, goals, objectives, and priorities of the department.
    • Create and promote a secure campus environment that is Christ-centered, student-focused, and collaborative.
    • Ensure that security operations are properly aligned with the needs of the campus community and the mission, vision, and values of the university.
    • Demonstrate a high level of awareness, good judgment, and critical thinking skills in all aspects of the positions.
    • Direct supervisor for the Training Captain and Administrative Captain.
    • Oversee their performance on training schedules, budget reviews, parking enforcement, and several other duties.
    • Oversee the Quartermaster duties for the department to include the inventory, issue, and return of uniforms and equipment, and the department fleet to include the scheduled maintenance and other services related to bicycle, UTV, and SUV patrol vehicles.
    • Establish command and implement ICS in accordance with NIMS / ICS training and the Belmont emergency management plan.
    • Serve as the incident commander directing operations, coordinating the activities of other responders, initiating internal and external notifications and communications, and keeping executive management apprised of the situation status.
    • Manage TIBRS and Clery statistics and compliance for the department. Take lead in preparation of documents for review by Chief and Deputy Chief related to Annual Security Reports, crime log, and Crime on Campus publication.
    • Manage the hiring process for new officers and employees within the department. Review applicants, schedule interviews, provide recommendations to Chief on employment decisions.
    • Perform and model all duties of subordinates.

Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, with or without corrective lenses. Critical Services - Must be able to work in inclement conditions even if offices are closed and classes are cancelled.

    • Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver's License, the ability to operate computer equipment and a 2-way radio, and either have or obtain certification as an armed security officer in the state of Tennessee.
    • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate observations and explain actions, to write clear and concise reports, as well as make presentations to the campus community; good listening skills; ability to understand and follow written and verbal directions; ability to relate to and gain the confidence and cooperation of the college community; ability to deal tactfully and effectively with a wide variety of people and act calmly and rationally in an emergency.
    • Must have self-restraint in challenging situations, ability to work without direct supervision, handle multiple priorities, and maintain confidentiality.
    • Must have a basic knowledge of state and local laws governing traffic movement, Belmont University parking rules and regulations, and laws governing trespassing on private property.
    • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and the ability to respond to high-pressure situations. Ability to thrive in an environment of hard work.
    • An ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

    Required EducationBachelor degree required. School of Police and Command or analogous course. Certified Field Training Officer (FTO). Certified instructor meeting POST Standards in Field. Prefer Instructor certification in use of force topics and Instructor certification in Crisis Intervention or related field.

    Required Experience

    • Minimum of 4 to 6 years Managing Security or Police personnel in community or Higher Education Setting, 7 to 9 years preferred. Military experience or Military NCOES schooling certifications can substitute for education.
    • Must be trained in, or have the ability to be trained in, critical incident management including the Incident Command System.
    • Must meet Tennessee state requirements for armed watch officers found at: http://www.tn.gov/regboards/pps/asgoReqs.shtml
    • Be at least 21 years of age for registration as an armed security guard.
    • Be legally mentally competent, be of good moral character.
    • Be free of habitual drunkenness or narcotics addiction or dependence
    • Be free of convictions including: Probation for 5 years for serious crimes OR Crimes involving: - Firearms - Shoplifting - Violence
    • Must meet the statutory training requirements.
    • Submit three fingerprint cards for processing by TBI and FBI for a criminal history check.

    The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check satisfactory to the University.
