Position Overview:
The Executive Farm & Commercial Underwriter evaluates Farm and Commercial applications for new and renewal business and requested changes for adherence to company guidelines, degree of risk, and potential for profitable results. This position entails frequent communication with claims, customer service, policyholders, agents, and other interested parties to obtain information, identify problem areas, determine appropriate action, and communicate and explain underwriting decisions. This is GIA's highest level underwriter position and as such manages a more complex book of business and serves as a resource for less experienced staff.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze underwriting data (claims history, reports, and risk assessments) to evaluate new and existing business
- Apply underwriting judgment to approve, modify, or decline policies within your authority
- Manage renewals and policy changes, determining whether to continue, adjust, or end coverage
- Communicate decisions clearly with agents and insureds, including requesting information and explaining risk factors
- Provide recommendations to improve risk quality and take action based on responses
- Partner with internal teams to address policy, payment, and risk-related matters
- Review and report on large losses to support ongoing risk evaluation
- Build strong relationships with independent agents and agencies
- Contribute to training efforts and share underwriting expertise with colleagues and partners
- Collaborate with leadership on strategies and programs that drive profitable growth
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree and six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- In depth knowledge of underwriting guidelines and underwriting philosophy
- Extensive knowledge of Farm and Commercial coverage forms, exclusions, pricing, structure, and rating.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with all state or other regulatory agency's laws, guidelines, and regulations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate with agents, insureds, mortgagees, lien holders, vendors and others through frequent written and telephone communication. A majority of communication takes place over the telephone
- Proficiency in use of computers, including skills in Word, Excel, and email system and proficiency in the Company's operating systems
- Ability to work well with people and promote teamwork.
- Good interpersonal and customer service skills
- Ability to multitask and effectively and independently prioritize and manage complex workload while exhibiting very sound judgment
- Occasional travel to agencies and events within assigned territory. Some overnight travel may be required
- Deals with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment
Preferred:
- Relevant insurance designation such as Associate in General Insurance (AINS), Associate in Personal Insurance (API), Agribusiness & Farm Insurance Specialist (AFIS), or Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU).
