SALARY & FLSA: $21.30 to $24.96 per hour; FLSA non-exempt

The $21.30 hourly starting pay is structured to be competitive and may extend up to the $22.86 midpoint of the annual range, reflecting our commitment to offering competitive compensation to qualified candidates.

This role is expected to work an average of 24 hours per week, spread between 3 to 4 shifts per week. Hours may change due to operational needs. It is anticipated to end on September 30, 2026.

WHO YOU ARE

As our new Exhibit Attendant we know you will be successful in this role because you are:

  • Guest Focused: The idea of interacting with a wide variety of guests throughout animal experiences including the Savanna Experience, Lorikeet Landing, Flamingle, and Butterfly Garden excites you. You're ready to create an inclusive experience for all guests as they explore the zoo, and you can facilitate the guest experience throughout the exhibit including staffing exhibit entry and exit, relaying expectations, and managing crowd-flow.
  • Flexible: You are adaptable, last-minute scheduling changes based on staffing and priorities for the day does not faze you. You can adjust to varying crowd sizes and variable weather throughout each day of the season.
  • An Empathy Bridge: You're ready to connect guests to the animals throughout the exhibit and create an enjoyable experience where guests can foster empathy, learn, and become motivated to act for animals.
  • An Engaged Team Member: Working alongside a group of peers each day, communicating with team members to cover breaks, rotating positions, and completing daily tasks are all duties you're willing to take on every day. You actively participate in check-in meetings and report important information to leadership and team.

YOUR PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Staff the public areas of the exhibit and provide customer service information and assistance to the public including: general information, educational/interpretive information, etc.
  • Interact directly with and assist visitors of all ages.
  • Oversee crowd flow and ensure viewing etiquette guidelines are followed by visitors.
  • Provide assistance to Animal Keepers.
  • Monitor the public, animals, buildings, and exhibit areas when Keepers have left the work areas.
  • Close the exhibit at the end of the day.
  • Staff the exhibit at special after-hours events upon request.
  • Support zoo policies in a professional manner.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
  • Knowledge of the zoo, preferably gained through working at the zoo in a volunteer or staff capacity.
  • Previous experience working with animals.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Ability to manage crowds and difficult situations.
  • Demonstrated reliability and punctuality.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to work varying hours and a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Ability to work with the public including diverse populations and people of all ages.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Successful applicants must live and work in Washington State to perform this role.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
