About the Position
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) is seeking a skilled and creative Exhibits Fabricator to join the Curatorial Services Section of the Museum Division. The successful candidate will play a vital role in bringing exhibitions to life by planning, coordinating, and executing the construction, installation, and maintenance of museum-quality exhibits across MDAH museum sites. The selected candidate will fabricate a wide variety of exhibit components for permanent, temporary, and traveling exhibitions, including display platforms, exhibit cases, shipping crates, interpretive signage, custom artifact mounts, and large scenic elements. Working closely with the Collections Section, the Exhibits Fabricator will design and construct artifact mounts and display systems that meet professional museum standards for the safe handling, preservation, and presentation of collections. This position will prepare gallery spaces for new exhibitions and lead or assist with exhibit installations and deinstallations, ensuring projects are completed safely and efficiently within established timelines. The successful candidate will inspect exhibits and gallery systems, perform routine maintenance and repairs, and collaborate with staff across MDAH museum sites to identify and address exhibit construction and maintenance needs. The Exhibits Fabricator will coordinate contracts with outside vendors, procure construction materials and maintenance supplies, maintain an organized inventory of tools, equipment, and materials, and ensure fabrication activities are supported with the resources necessary for successful project completion. Working closely with curators, designers, conservators, and other museum professionals, the selected candidate will develop creative and practical solutions for exhibit fabrication and installation. The position will also assist with exhibit content development as needed and serve as the project manager for assigned exhibition projects, coordinating schedules, budgets, contractors, resources, and installation activities from concept through completion. In addition, this position will provide direct supervision to exhibits maintenance staff by assigning work, establishing clear expectations, and providing ongoing guidance and support. The successful candidate will communicate effectively with staff, conduct performance evaluations, encourage professional development, and foster a collaborative work environment. At the same time, ensuring projects are completed efficiently and in accordance with established quality and safety standards. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional craftsmanship, strong organizational and project management skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced museum environment. This individual will provide technical expertise in exhibit fabrication, promote safe work practices, maintain an organized and efficient workshop, and help deliver engaging, accessible, and high-quality exhibitions that preserve, interpret, and share Mississippis rich history.

A strong work ethic, effective workflow management, sound problem-solving and decision-making skills, and a high level of accountability. The ideal candidate will be dependable, organized, and committed to producing high-quality work while consistently meeting deadlines. This position requires the ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds, work comfortably on ladders and lifts, and maintain an organized, safe, and efficient workshop. Knowledge of ADA accessibility requirements and compliance standards is also desirable.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree and 4-7 years of experience. Hiring agency prefers: Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university and four years of relevant experience. Preferred fields of study include museum studies, industrial arts, theater or scenic design, fine arts, or a closely related discipline. Candidates should also possess at least two years of professional experience in exhibit fabrication, scenic construction, museum preparation, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education, training, and directly related experience will be considered. A strong background in general construction, carpentry, and painting is essential. Experience using power tools and specialized equipment, such as large material cutters, CNC routers, and 3D printers, is highly desirable. Proficiency in producing high-quality, museum-grade finishes, including detailed work such as sanding, painting, laminating, and finishing exhibit components, is expected.
