About the Position

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) is seeking a skilled and creative Exhibits Fabricator to join the Curatorial Services Section of the Museum Division. This supervisory position constructs exhibit components, assists with exhibit installation and deinstallation, and maintains existing exhibits across MDAH museum sites. The position supervises exhibit fabrication projects and builds highly specialized, museum-quality components, including platforms, cases, crates, artifact mounts, and large scenic elements. The candidate must have strong spatial reasoning skills to translate conceptual designs into finished products and should have experience and proficiency with detailed work such as sanding, painting, laminating, and detailing components to achieve a specific high-end aesthetic finish. The candidate should be knowledgeable of ADA accessibility and compliance standards. The position works closely with the conservator, collections staff, exhibits staff, and other museum personnel to ensure exhibit components meet established museum standards and project specifications and to develop ideas for temporary, traveling, and permanent exhibits. The candidate must be receptive to feedback and effectively collaborate with others throughout the exhibit development and installation process. As supervisor of exhibit maintenance staff, the candidate must demonstrate strong communication and collaborative leadership skills and serve as exhibit project manager as assigned. Additional responsibilities include addressing routine and emergency maintenance needs; preparing galleries for exhibitions, including the installation of lighting elements and temporary walls; maintaining and repairing existing exhibits; purchasing and stocking supplies and materials for construction and maintenance; coordinating with and administering contracts for outside vendors; and assisting with other museum facility and exhibit-related needs as assigned.

A strong work ethic, effective workflow management, sound problem-solving and decision-making skills, and a high level of accountability. The ideal candidate will be dependable, organized, and committed to producing high-quality work while consistently meeting deadlines. The applicant should have strong skills in general construction, carpentry, and painting; be able to lift heavy loads over 50 lbs.; be comfortable working on ladders and lifts; and maintain organization and efficiency in a carpentry workshop.

Preferred Qualifications

This position typically requires a bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university and four years of relevant experience. Hiring agency preferred qualifications: Preferred fields of study include museum studies, industrial arts, theater or scenic design, fine arts, or a closely related discipline; Preferred Experience using power tools, including specialized tools like large material cutters, and digital fabrication tools like a CNC router is preferred.

Paid Personal Leave and Sick Leave
