Description:

Job Summary:

  • The Facilities Engineering & Safety Manager serves as the technical authority for hospital engineering systems, life safety programs, and Environment of Care (EOC) compliance.
  • This role ensures the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of critical infrastructure systems, including utilities and life safety systems, in accordance with Joint Commission, NFPA, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • This position operates as a senior individual contributor responsible for engineering system integrity, life safety code compliance, and safety risk mitigation.
  • The role partners closely with Facilities Operations, Construction, Security, and Clinical Leadership to support uninterrupted patient care, regulatory readiness, and system reliability across the organization.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Facilities Engineering and Utilities Management:

  • Serve as the technical authority for hospital building systems, utilities, fire protection, and environmental control systems.
  • Ensure reliable operation and risk mitigation of critical infrastructure, including power, HVAC, medical gas, water, and fire protection systems.
  • Establish engineering standards, performance expectations, and response protocols; lead technical response to system failures, infrastructure disruptions, and high-risk conditions.

Safety and Life Safety Programs:

  • Lead and support hospital-wide safety, fire safety, and hazard communication programs in alignment with regulatory standards.
  • Maintain the master fire plan and ensure compliance with NFPA Life Safety Code requirements.
  • Coordinate fire drills, alarm systems, and emergency response readiness in collaboration with Security and local authorities.

Regulatory Compliance and Environment of Care (EOC):

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for Joint Commission Environment of Care, Life Safety, and Emergency Management standards.
  • Support regulatory surveys and inspections, ensuring documentation, reporting, and operational readiness.
  • Maintain the Statement of Conditions and all required life safety and compliance documentation.

Operational Support and Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Provide technical consultation to Facilities Operations and Construction teams to ensure safe and compliant system design and execution.
  • Ensure Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSMs) are defined, implemented, and monitored during construction activities and system outages.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external utility providers to ensure system reliability and continuity of service.

Performance Improvement and Training:

  • Develop and support training programs and competency standards related to engineering systems, life safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Analyze system performance, identify risks, and implement improvement initiatives to enhance reliability and safety outcomes.
  • Promote a culture of safety, regulatory readiness, and continuous improvement across the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Safety, Facilities Management, Public Health, or a related field, or equivalent experience

Experience

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in healthcare engineering, life safety, safety management, or related operational roles

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Required):

  • Expertise in Joint Commission Environment of Care (EOC), Life Safety, and Emergency Management standards
  • Strong knowledge of NFPA Life Safety Code and hospital utility systems
  • Ability to independently manage complex engineering systems and safety-related issues
  • Knowledge of fire protection systems, safety programs, and hazard communication standards
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to act as a technical authority
  • Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority
  • Effective communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred Qualifications

Certification

  • Advanced safety or facilities certification (e.g., CHFM, CHSP, CSP, or equivalent)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Preferred):

  • Experience supporting Joint Commission surveys and regulatory inspections
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare infrastructure systems and compliance programs
  • Experience developing performance metrics and reporting for engineering and safety programs

 

 Physical Requirements (Medium - Max 25 lbs): Up to 25 lbs., 0-33% of the workday (occasionally). Lifting up to 25 lbs.; occasional standing, walking, or sitting; close eye work including computer use. Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and tasks.
