Position Overview

The Facilities & Grounds Assistant supports the maintenance, safety, cleanliness, and appearance of the Community Montessori School campus. The position reports to the Executive Director or designee and receives day-to-day work assignments and direction from the Facilities & Land Manager.

This position assists with routine maintenance, groundskeeping, repairs, and campus improvement projects to help ensure that school buildings, outdoor spaces, equipment, and grounds remain safe, functional, and welcoming for students, staff, families, and visitors.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance

  • Complete assigned maintenance tasks and minor repairs throughout the school campus.
  • Assist with identifying facility maintenance needs, safety concerns, and needed repairs.
  • Complete staff-requested repairs as assigned and communicate progress or completion to the Facilities & Land Manager.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance for buildings, equipment, and campus systems.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, work areas, and maintenance supplies in an organized and safe condition.
  • Promptly report hazards, damage, repair needs, or tasks requiring outside vendors to the Facilities & Land Manager.

Groundskeeping & Campus Safety

  • Complete assigned groundskeeping tasks, including mowing, weed-eating, trimming, watering, leaf and debris removal, and general outdoor cleanup.
  • Help maintain walkways, playground areas, parking areas, outdoor learning spaces, and other campus grounds.
  • Observe the campus for unsafe conditions and report concerns promptly.
  • Assist with preparation and cleanup related to weather, seasonal needs, school events, and campus activities.
  • Follow established procedures for the safe use, storage, and disposal of gasoline, pesticides, cleaning products, and other potentially hazardous materials.
  • Use tools, machinery, and personal protective equipment safely and appropriately.

Projects & School Support

  • Assist with campus repairs, improvements, setup, moving, and special projects as assigned.
  • Support projects scheduled during school closures, breaks, or periods of reduced campus activity.
  • Help prepare spaces for school events, meetings, classroom needs, and seasonal transitions.
  • Complete work based on priorities and instructions provided by the Facilities & Land Manager.
  • Coordinate assigned work in a manner that minimizes disruption to students and school operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support facilities, grounds, and overall school operations.

Communication & Accountability

  • Communicate regularly with the Facilities & Land Manager regarding assigned tasks, progress, completed work, safety concerns, and additional maintenance needs.
  • Notify the Facilities & Land Manager promptly if an assignment cannot be completed safely or requires additional tools, supplies, expertise, or vendor support.
  • Refer employment, scheduling, performance, or policy concerns to the Executive Director or designee.
  • Maintain dependable attendance, punctuality, and follow-through on assigned responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in facilities maintenance, landscaping, groundskeeping, construction, custodial work, or a related field preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, and routine maintenance practices.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to complete assigned work independently while following directions and established priorities.
  • Ability to identify and communicate maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Ability to interact professionally and respectfully with students, staff, families, vendors, and visitors.
  • Required to meet and maintain all applicable local, state, and federal requirements for working on a school campus, including required background checks.

Physical & Mental Demands

  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and temperature conditions.
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive physical tasks.
  • Regularly lift and carry tools, equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds independently and heavier items with assistance or appropriate equipment.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Work around noise, dust, dirt, grass, pollen, insects, cleaning products, gasoline, pesticides, and other materials commonly associated with facilities and grounds work.
  • Maintain attention to safety while working in an active school environment with students, staff, and visitors present.
  • Maintain professionalism and composure when priorities change or urgent maintenance needs arise.
