Job Description Summary:

Are you a skilled Facilities Maintenance Technician looking to expand your skills and grow your career? St. Louis County Department of Transportation/Public Works is currently seeking detail-oriented Facilities Maintenance Technicians to utilize their skills in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of County owned facilities.

These roles ensure proper functioning of critical building systems to ensure the safety of employees, residents, and visitors to County owned facilities. In addition to technical skills, ideal candidates will be proactive and value quality workmanship, public service, and maintaining essential community assets.

Job Description:

Currently, we are seeking candidates for Facilities Maintenance Technician I (Building Systems Mechanic) and Facilities Maintenance Technician II (Building Systems Specialist)

Starting Salary

Facilities Maintenance Technician I - $22.03-$26.44 per hour depending on experience and qualifications

Facilities Maintenance Technician II - $23.68 - $28.42 per hour depending on experience and qualifications

Work Location

Various St. Louis County facilities, based on departmental assignment.

Hours/Schedule: Standard schedule is typically Monday-Friday 6:30 A.M.-3:00 P.M. On‑call work, emergency response, or after‑hours support may be required depending on facility needs.

Example of Duties for Facilities Maintenance Technician II:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and corrective maintenance on building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Maintain and troubleshoot HVAC equipment including chillers, pumps, cooling towers, fan coil units, air handlers, and related systems
  • Monitor and adjust controls, gauges, valves, thermostats, and energy management systems to ensure a comfortable and efficient environment
  • Conduct regular building rounds, verify operating conditions, and complete necessary repairs
  • Perform general building maintenance, including basic carpentry, lighting, hardware, and fixture repairs
  • Complete preventive maintenance tasks following County standards, manufacturer guidelines, and industry best practices
  • Inspect mechanical rooms, generators, pumps, and life-safety systems; document findings and communicate issues promptly
  • Support fire and life-safety compliance through inspections and adherence to NFPA and local codes
  • Respond to facility emergencies, building system failures, and occupant concerns in a timely, professional manner
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work environment and comply with all County safety procedures, policies, and training requirements
  • Represent the County professionally through adherence to uniform and appearance standards

  • Perform other duties as required or assigned

  • Candidate must participate in On-Call rotation
  • Perform routine and corrective maintenance on building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Maintain and troubleshoot HVAC equipment including chillers, pumps, cooling towers, fan coil units, air handlers, and related systems

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications for Facilities Maintenance Technician I:

A valid driver's license and:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least three (3) years of experience operating and maintaining mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in a commercial or institutional setting
  • Equivalent to graduation from Technical School or completion of a formal apprenticeship in a skilled building systems trade

Preferred Qualifications for Facilities Maintenance Technician I:

  • Completion of a trade school program or apprenticeship
  • Applicable trade licenses or certifications (e.g., HVAC, boiler operation, asbestos etc.)
  • Experience with energy management systems and large-scale facility operations
  • Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • EPA 608 Universal certification - must have or obtain within 6 months of hire date

Minimum Qualifications for Facilities Maintenance Technician II:

A valid driver's license and:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least four (4) years of experience operating and maintaining mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in a commercial or institutional setting
  • Equivalent to graduation from Technical School or completion of a formal apprenticeship in a skilled building systems trade

Preferred Qualifications for Facilities Maintenance Technician II:

  • Completion of a trade school program or apprenticeship - two-year minimum
  • Applicable trade licenses or certifications (e.g., HVAC, boiler operation, asbestos etc.)
  • Experience with energy management systems and large-scale facility operations
  • Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • EPA 608 Universal certification - must have or obtain within 6 months of hire date

Pre-Employment Process Requirements:

Applicants will be evaluated based on relevant education, experience, responses to supplemental questions, and other work-related information provided on the application. Resumes are supplementary and do not replace the required application.

All candidates will receive notifications regarding application status once determined. Status updates are provided via email and can be found within each candidate's Workday profile.

Responses that qualified candidates provide to the application questions will count as 100% of their final evaluation score. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment.  The five highest-ranking candidates will be referred to the Department Director/Appointing Authority for final selection.

Pre-Employment Screening:

Candidates extended a conditional offer must successfully complete all required pre‑employment screenings. These screenings include a drug test administered at no cost to the applicant by a certified laboratory and a background check evaluating the recency and relevance of the candidate's history to the position. Candidates must complete the drug test within 48 hours of receiving a conditional offer; failure to do so may result in withdrawal of the offer.
