ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Galt is currently accepting applications for

Facilities Maintenance Worker I/II.

Base Pay:

Effective July 1, 2027

Facilities Maintenance Worker I- $24.41 - $29.97

Facilities Maintenance Worker II - $26.96 - $33.09

ADDITIONAL PAY (UPON ASSIGNMENT AND ELIGIBILITY):

• Longevity Pay - beginning at 10 years of service, 5%; 15 years of service, 7.5%.
• Bilingual Pay - $100 per month.
• Medical-in-lieu - Employees who waive the Citys medical coverage shall receive $200 per month for employee only, $350 per month for employee plus one, and $500 per month for family.
• Incentives - up to 2.5% - 10%
• On Call Pay - Two hours per day and four hours per holiday.
• Standby Pay - Two hours for each standby shift of 8 hours or less.

BENEFITS:

• Home Buying Program - $25,000 interest-free loan to assist with the purchase of a home in Galt city limits.
• Tuition Reimbursement - Up to $4,000 per fiscal year.
• Holiday Pay - 14 holidays; thirteen (13) paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday. Thirteen (13) fixed holidays observed: New Year's Day, MLK Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
• Vacation Leave - 80 hours per year; after 4 years- 120 hours; after 10 years- 160 hours; after 15 years- 200 hours, and after 22 years- 240 hours.
• Vacation Credit - Those with 4+ years of prior public agency experience may request to accrue at a rate of 120 hours.
• Vacation Cash Out - Cash out up to forty (40) hours of vacation per year.
• Sick Leave - 8 hours per month. Remaining balances roll over with no maximum cap.
• Health Insurance - City pays a generous portion of the CalPERS medical premium, including 100% for Employee+One for 5 of the health plans. City pays 100% for dental and vision premiums.
• Life Insurance - City-paid $50,000 policy and $1,500 policy for dependents.
• Long Term Disability - City-paid benefit is up to 60% of base salary.

NON-EXEMPT

Under direct or general supervision, performs a variety of technical maintenance, repair, installation, alteration, and construction activities of City buildings and facilities involving electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and masonry; uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools; and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direct or general supervision from the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. May provide some direct supervision over subordinate staff as applicable.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Facilities Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry level class in the Facilities Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents initially work under immediate supervision and receive detailed instructions and training on assignments. Incumbents generally work within an established framework of set procedures in performing assigned tasks. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.

Facilities Maintenance Worker II: This is the journey level class in the Facilities Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents work under general supervision performing the full range of semi- skilled and skilled maintenance work. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

This class is distinguished from the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor in that the latter is the full supervisory-level class in the series and has ultimate responsibility for organizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of all staff involved in parks maintenance operations.

Positions in the Facilities Maintenance Worker class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the I level requiring two (2) additional years of experience and after gaining the knowledge, skill, and experience and after demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have three (3) years of prior related experience that allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the II level.

• Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled activities including painting, carpentry, electrical repair, plumbing, welding, and other maintenance work as directed.
• Performs safety inspections of City buildings and facilities; oversees various other safety functions for City buildings.
• Reads and interprets technical manuals, sketches, diagrams, and blueprints to facilitate installation, servicing, repair, and replacement services and activities.
• Responds to customer complaints and inquiries regarding facilities and buildings.
• Prepares procedures and maintenance manuals for City building mechanical; electrical; and heating, ventilation, and (HVAC) systems.
• Assists with preparing scopes of work, soliciting cost proposals.
• Assists in the preparation of RFPs (Requests for Proposal) for building maintenance and janitorial services and supplies.
• Maintains public facilities, shop areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
• Responds to emergency situations in off-duty hours as required.
• Maintains records of daily work performed and resources used.
• Operates a standard vehicle to travel to multiple locations in order to perform assigned tasks; transporting equipment as needed, and performing assigned tasks at each worksite.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

• Basic principles, practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities, including carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, welding, and mechanical and electrical work.

• Carpentry: Grades and types of lumber; proper uses and sizing of wood, screws, nails, glues, and other fasteners and tools used; and safety precautions.
• Electrical: Tools, minor testing equipment, sizes and types of wires and fuses, and safety precautions.
• Painting: Types of paints, stains, lacquers, and varnishes; methods of preparing surfaces; and safety precautions.
• Plumbing: Sizes, types, and composition of common pipes used in plumbing; and safety precautions.

• Read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, maps, and specifications.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Facilities Maintenance Worker I: Equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of work experience performing a variety of maintenance and/or construction work including work in one or more of the following trades: carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, mechanical, and welding.

Facilities Maintenance Worker II: Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of experience performing a variety of maintenance and/or construction work including work in one or more of the following trades: carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, mechanical, and welding; or two (2) years of experience equivalent to Facilities Maintenance Worker I.

Licenses and Certificates:

Facilities Maintenance Worker I & II:

• Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Licenses and certificates listed below are desirable, but not required at the time of appointment. However, at the discretion of the City and depending upon business necessity, certain persons in this class may be required to obtain any of the below listed licenses, certificates, or specialized education and training within a specified timeframe.

• Possession of valid Class B California driver's license with airbrakes and tanker endorsements and satisfactory driving record.
• Possession of Contractor's License (General).
• Possession of Contractor's License (Specialty).
• Possession of HVAC Technician Certification.
• Possession of Refrigeration Certification (EPA Section 608 Type II or universal).
• Possession of Plumbing Certification.
• Possession of Certified Building Inspector (Residential or Commercial).
• Possession of Drone Pilot Certification.
• Possession of Detention Equipment Technology & Maintenance Certification.
• Possession of Electrical Technologies Certification (required for level II, see below).

Facilities Maintenance Worker II:

• Obtain Electrical Technologies Certification within the probationary period.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; vision to read printed material and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above- mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

EVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspaces, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives, and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to traffic and potentially hazardous chemicals.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background investigation, including fingerprinting. Must be available for shift work, standby assignments, and work emergency overtime as required.
