Facilities Mechanic III

ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Facilities Mechanic III to join our team. The salary range for this position: $54,000.00 - 56,000.00 for a 35 hour work week.

Final salary is based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity.

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Mechanic III is responsible for performing alteration and repair of all ArtCenter buildings, HVAC systems, and mechanical equipment. This position maintains the building systems such as heating, air and ventilation (HVAC), lighting and electrical, plumbing and landscaping, along with providing setup and manpower support for various departments.

This is a technical full-time on-site position with a schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 3:30 p.m. The position is primarily based at Hillside Campus and will rotate shifts with staff at South Campus. The demands of this work may include weekends or evenings. The college reserves the right to modify schedules as needed to meet the business needs with appropriate notice.

Essential Functions

General Maintenance and Repair 80%

  • Perform hands-on general building maintenance and repairs, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC support, lighting, wall repairs, painting, carpentry, and minor roof and furniture repairs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve basic issues with HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems; clean mechanical components such as bearings, fan housings, drain pans, and machine rooms.
  • Install and repair fixtures and equipment, including fire extinguishers, bulletin boards, seismic anchors, bathroom fixtures, cabinetry hardware, windows, doors, fences, and gates.
  • Operate forklifts, grounds vehicles, hand tools, power tools, and landscaping equipment safely and effectively.
  • Perform plumbing maintenance including clearing drain stoppages and cleaning sediment traps.
  • Coordinate with the Lead Facilities Mechanic to identify tasks that require higher-level technical expertise.

Safety -10%

  • Attend all assigned EHS and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) education workshops.
  • Stay current on all safety practices and procedures per manufacturer's requirements and federal/state requirements.
  • Strictly adhere to EHS policies and procedures.

Other 10%

  • Use good judgment to take appropriate, basic actions when a problem arises, even without detailed instructions, as long as it is safe to do so.
  • Complete assigned work orders, received verbally, in writing, or electronically, in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Follow departmental procedures for ordering, maintenance, inventory, and documentation of supplies and materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience and education
  • 6 years of hands-on technical experience in maintenance and/or building repair on complex building systems
  • Valid California Driver License
  • Ability to read, write and understand the English language to be able to interact effectively with staff, faculty and vendor
  • Working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and Building Management/Automation Systems (BMS)
  • Strong customer service orientation with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, follow through on assignments, and manage tasks with minimal supervision
  • Ability to function effectively both as a team member and independently based on operational needs
  • Ability to work efficiently under frequent interruptions, shifting priorities, and tight or changing deadlines
  • Effective problem solving and judgment in assessing situations and determining appropriate actions
  • Reliable, resourceful, proactive, and able to balance multiple priorities
  • Ability and willingness to work in confined spaces, at heights, outdoors, and to pull and lift objects up to 50lbs in weight
  • Flexibility to work weekends, nights and respond to emergency repairs as needed
  • Knowledge of and ability to safely use light power tools, ladders, and basic hand tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or technical degree from a recognized trade school, or equivalent experience
  • Certifications in specialized areas of maintenance
  • Certifications in fall protection, aerial work platforms, and industrial lift trucks
