Our initiative primarily focuses on nurturing and leveraging the potential of interns. Historically, while the district has employed faculty interns, there hasn't been a targeted approach to their recruitment or professional growth.

With the SCCCD's expanded vision:

• The program will foster an environment that encourages intern faculty to transition to full and part-time positions within our district.
• Intensive training sessions, including a minimum of 4 half-day workshops, will be facilitated, emphasizing cultural competency and innovative pedagogical techniques.
• We will strengthen ties with minority-representing higher educational institutions and broaden our Human Resources and faculty networks to increase outreach and awareness.
• Existing faculty will play an instrumental role in guiding the intern faculty, ensuring a seamless transition and integration into the community.

Our program is an embodiment of best practices from various community college models and stands as a testament to the district's commitment to building a diverse and inclusive faculty team. With the unwavering support from multiple administrative offices and the SCCCD Chancellor's vision, we are paving the way for advanced Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) initiatives over the coming years. The program's expansion aims to create a legacy of inclusivity, diversity, and excellence in education to ensure that SCCCD provides the conditions for our diverse students to succeed.

Program Overview:

Orientation, Teaching, and Coursework

• Engage in a pre-semester orientation and post-semester celebration
• Regularly engage in activities with the Mentor, including observation and consultation
• Teach courses as assigned
• Complete all required materials in a timely manner.

Communication and Collaboration with Mentors

• Establish clear, respectful communication with mentors, frequently sharing needs, aspirations, and insights.
• Work together with mentors on course/lesson planning, developing student assessment techniques, and strategizing on inclusive classroom environments.

Student Interaction and Engagement

• Under the guidance of the Mentor, learn effective strategies for student engagement, classroom management, and promoting an environment where every student's ideas, cultures, and identities are recognized and respected.

Professional Development and Community Integration

• Grasp the significance of campus or departmental committee services by attending college, division, or department specific meetings.
• Participate in dialogue emphasizing cultural humility, DEIA, and building a deeper understanding of the roles various campus entities play in the success of students and staff.
• Strengthen connections to the community college faculty culture through ongoing conversations with mentors on prioritizing tasks, work-life balance, professional development, and more.
• Pursue career advancement opportunities by attending a District hiring workshop, refining application and interview techniques with mentors, and networking with higher education professionals and students.

Minimum Qualifications

The Program is open to all qualified applicants. Qualification is determined by meeting the eligibility requirements listed below, which align with the minimum requirements to be employed as a faculty intern as established by the California Code of Regulations Title V.

• Never taught at a community college.
• Degree in-process matches matches with a discipline. Use the California Community College's definition of Minimum Qualifications to understand in which discipline you'd be able to serve as a faculty member. If your degree is in a non-traditional academic discipline that doesn't match traditional lower-division classes offered at our colleges, please be sure to read through the Minimum Qualifications Handbook.
• For those disciplines in which a master's degree is required, faculty interns must have completed at least 50% of the credits toward their graduate degree.
• For those disciplines in which a a master's degree is not required, faculty interns must have six (6) years of related work experience and completion of half of an Associate degree OR four (4) years of related work experience and completion of half of a Bachelor's degree.

Desirable Qualifications

• Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Salary and Benefits

During the first semester of the program, interns will be paid a $1,500.00 stipend for shadowing their mentors.

Participants who successfully complete the first semester may be selected for a paid internship in the second semester. For instructional interns they will serve as the Instructor of Record and non-instructional interns will receive an assignment. Second-semester internships are not guaranteed.

• If placed in a paid internship faculty position during the second semester interns will be compensated at Class I, Step 1of Salary Schedule C.

Selection Procedure

Faculty In Training Intern applications will be reviewed based on program needs and available opportunities. If your application is selected for further consideration, you will be contacted directly with any questions and/or an opportunity to interview.

Please note: This position does not have a closing date and applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis. By applying you understand that you will be placed in a continuous pool. Start dates may vary. If at any time you are no longer interested, please withdraw your application. Your application will remain on file for 18 months. If you are not interviewed/selected for an internship within 18 months and still wish to pursue the opportunity, a new application will be required.
