This is an exciting time to work for Amarillo College! We are seeking our next Faculty - Law Enforcement Academy who will be all-in on our mission and who is responsible for delivering high-quality education and training within the Panhandle Regional Law Enforcement Academy and other Amarillo College Public Service programs. The Instructor provides classroom, laboratory, scenario-based, and online instruction; develops and delivers instructional materials; evaluates student performance; and ensures compliance with Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) standards and requirements.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, the Instructor assists the Faculty Program Coordinator with academy operations and supports the Dean of Public Service Programs (or designee) in the planning, coordination, and delivery of continuing education and specialized training programs for law enforcement and related public safety professionals. The Instructor maintains strong partnerships with law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders and may, when appropriately credentialed, teach or assist in related first responder disciplines, including Fire Service and Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Required: Associates Degree from an accredited institution.

Preferred: Bachelors or Masters Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Public Administration, Homeland Security, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Five (5) years of progressively responsible law enforcement, corrections, military police, or other public safety experience.

Preferred: Five (5) plus years of public safety experience and prior teaching, training, academy instruction, curriculum development, or supervisory experience.

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES:

Required:

  • Valid Texas Class C Drivers License.
  • Texas Peace Officer License in good standing.
  • Current TCOLE Instructor Certification.

Preferred:

  • Advanced TCOLE Instructor Certification.
  • Firearms Instructor Certification.
  • Defensive Tactics Instructor Certification.
  • Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) Certification.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor Certification.
  • Other public safety specialty certifications.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned courses in the Basic Peace Officer Academy and related programs utilizing classroom, laboratory, practical exercise, and online instructional methods.
  • Develop, maintain, and deliver lesson plans, syllabi, assessments, and instructional materials that align with approved curriculum and TCOLE requirements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of law enforcement trends, legislation, technology, and best practices to ensure instructional relevance and effectiveness.
  • Evaluate student learning, monitor academic progress, and maintain accurate student records and documentation.
  • Assist with the recruitment, interviewing, selection, and evaluation of Academy applicants.
  • Support the planning, coordination, scheduling, and delivery of continuing education and specialized training programs for law enforcement and related public safety professionals.
  • Assist with academy scheduling, training calendars, equipment management, and program logistics.
  • Ensure compliance with TCOLE standards, reporting requirements, and accreditation guidelines.
  • Select, maintain, and recommend instructional resources, equipment, and training materials.
  • Participate in professional development activities, faculty meetings, advisory committee meetings, graduations, and other College functions.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with law enforcement agencies, criminal justice partners, advisory boards, and community stakeholders.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to adjunct instructors, supplemental trainers, and support staff as assigned.
  • Perform other work-related duties as required.

  • Thorough knowledge of TCOLE rules, regulations, training standards, and law enforcement practices.
  • Demonstrated instructional and presentation skills with the ability to effectively engage diverse learners.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare reports, maintain records, and manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn and utilize learning management systems, simulation technology, and College software applications.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, law enforcement agencies, and community partners.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, communicate, demonstrate instructional techniques, and participate in classroom and practical training activities. The position may require prolonged periods of standing; participation in scenario-based exercises; and occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving instructional equipment, training aids, and supplies weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Travel between College facilities, training sites, law enforcement agencies, and community locations may be required.

Working Conditions: Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as necessary to support academy operations, continuing education programs, and community training needs.

Working Environment: This position operates in a variety of instructional environments, including classrooms, skills laboratories, simulation environments, firearms ranges, driving courses, and other indoor and outdoor training locations. This is a full-time, twelve (12) month faculty position and may require occasional travel between College campuses, off-campus training sites, partner agencies, and community locations.
