Job Description

Step into the action this fall and gain hands-on experience in the world of sports and recreation! As a Sports Management/Athletics Intern with Parks, Rec, & Tourism, you'll play a key role in bringing community athletic programs and events to life. You'll build leadership skills, learn event operations, and make an impact in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

What You'll Do:

  • Deliver excellent customer service to players, coaches, volunteers, and spectators by responding to questions, explaining rules, and sharing program details.
  • Assist with organizing, scheduling, and managing athletic leagues, tournaments, and community sports events.
  • Help recruit, lead, and support volunteers and contractual staff to ensure programs run safely and smoothly.
  • Monitor games, practices, and recreation sites to ensure safety, fair play, and proper facility use.
  • Enforce athletic rules and policies across a variety of sports, including softball, soccer, basketball, football, volleyball, cheerleading, and more.
  • Resolve on-the-spot conflicts or concerns among players, coaches, and spectators in a professional and calm manner.
  • Set up and take down athletic fields, courts, and event spaces - including equipment such as goals, nets, flags, and benches.
  • Conduct safety and equipment checks; inspect fields and facilities for maintenance needs and report issues as needed.
  • Support event logistics such as participant registration, team organization, and event-day coordination.
  • Perform light custodial and field maintenance tasks to keep facilities clean, safe, and game-ready.
  • Assist with promotional efforts, distributing materials, and engaging the community to encourage participation.
  • Learn how to balance recreation operations, customer service, and teamwork in a real-world municipal setting.

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate is a college student in good standing - preferably a junior, senior, or graduate student who is currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, or who has graduated within the past year.

Preferred Qualifications

Requires a valid driver's license with a driving record that complies with the City Driving Standards,

Customer service experience

Work hours vary and include significant evenings, weekends and periodically holidays.

Will be required to work some events, programs and activities within other sections of the City and Department.

Preferred academic work in recreational and/or environmental studies.

Fall 2026 internships begin on or after August 17, 2026. The length of the internship may vary depending on the student's availability. The student may work up to 30 hours per week for a maximum of 360 hours.

Students participating in the Internship Program will be responsible for :

  • Providing their own transportation to and from work,
  • Arriving at the work site at the time designated by the work site supervisor.
  • Performing the tasks assigned by the vocational instructor/coordinator and the work site supervisor in an efficient manner.
  • Demonstrating honesty, punctuality, courtesy, a cooperative attitude, appropriate dress, and a willingness to learn.
  • Conforming to the guidelines of the internship work site.
