Family Birth Center Educator (Internal applicants only)

JOB SUMMARY:

The ONNE assists the FBC Supervisor in promoting and maintaining quality obstetric and neonatal patient care in the Family Birth Center and other LHC departments caring for obstetric/neonatal patients. The ONNE is responsible for assessing, developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs for FBC personnel to maintain competency, continuing education, and develop leadership potential within the team. This position requires collaboration between the nursing departmental leadership and education staff to establish goals and priorities in accordance with patient care, staff needs and organizational objectives while assuring quality patient care is delivered through the assessment, coaching and development of nursing staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

2. Demonstrates positive, supportive and caring behaviors in communication with and serves as a resource for colleagues, medical staff, patients, families and visitors.
3. Provides leadership and motivation to colleagues, to optimize workflow and satisfaction for patients, providers, and team members by providing feedback to FBC staff in real time.
4. Supports the supervisor by providing input into the maintenance and development of guidelines, procedures, and policies.
5. Collaborates with the FBC supervisor to facilitate staff meetings, orientation/trainings, and other educational opportunities to assure best-practices are being utilized throughout the unit. Plans for and anticipates changes and subsequent adaptations.
6. Serves as a resource and role model in implementation of professional nursing practice in the clinical setting by recognizing and responding to staff’s developmental and professional practice issues through mentoring, team building, resource identification and networking.
7. Serves as subject matter expert/super user in department regarding EMR, assists in training FBC staff assuring consistency, compliance, and evolution of new workflows within the EHR.
8. Collaborates with education and staff development personnel regarding onboarding, training, and developing skilled staff for the department.
9. Develops teaching skills and participates in the planning, implementation, compilation of proficiency assessments of orientation and teaching programs for student nurses in the clinical setting.
10. Understands and optimizes patient satisfaction scores for FBC.
11. Supports staff engagement.
12. Utilizes performance improvement principles and collaborates with leadership to assess and improve quality initiatives within the organization.
13. Assists the FBC Supervisor by actively participating on Committees, attending meetings as assigned.
14. Provides for professional growth and development of nursing staff and establishes a climate conducive to meeting educational needs and efforts of the unit.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Continually assesses the birth center environment to determine educational needs of patients and FBC staff.
2. Plan and provide education for FBC staff - skills days, in-services, fire drills, code drills, etc.
3. Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to provide insightful, innovative educational opportunities.
4. Manage all aspects of educational projects including fiscal responsibility.
5. Assist FBC personnel in assessing their individual learning needs and styles.
6. Maintain FBC employee educational data and records.
7. Facilitate student learning experiences in the birth center setting.
8. Pursue professional growth and participate in applicable professional organizations.
9. Assists with policy review and development as needed
10. Assists with patient care as needed, even on days scheduled for education duties.
11. Assists with being the liaison to coding staff to optimize revenue capture through inpatient workflow and develop educational opportunities to improve workflow processes.
12. Functions in the role of Cerner super-user and assists new staff and existing staff with electronic health record training and support.
13. Performs other duties as assigned or as needed to meet the needs of the department or organization.
14. Resource for Childbirth Educator to coordinate class education, instructors and scheduling.

QUALIFICATIONS (Required):

1. Current unrestricted RN license in Montana
2. Three(3) to five(5) years of OB clinical experience
3. Demonstrated leadership abilities
4. Possess good oral and written communication skills
5. Demonstrated interpersonal relationships in a manner which enhances communication, promotes conflict resolution and facilitates staff development.
6. Skills and knowledge to sustain and evaluate clinical competence in caring for the specific age and type of patient population served.
7. BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, Intermediate Fetal Monitoring, STABLE certifications
8. Computer skills (Word, excel)
