Position: Nurse Practitioner – PRN
Location: Monterey County Corrections Facility – Salinas, CA
Schedule: PRN (as needed coverage)
Pay: $86–$96/hr DOE


Accountable To:

Health Services Administrator (HSA) and on-site Medical Director (MD), as well as CMD/CMO


Position Summary:

Under the direct administrative supervision of the Health Services Administrator and the clinical supervision of the on-site Medical Director and CMD/CMO, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for ensuring that organizational goals and objectives are met within the assigned service delivery area. This includes conducting, leading, directing, managing, and evaluating medical services to ensure contractual obligations and client expectations are met.

The NP is also responsible for ensuring all medical services are delivered in accordance with NCCHC, ACA, and professional medical standards.


Position Requirements:

  • Current, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license in the state of California

  • Current DEA registration (or eligibility to obtain)

  • Collaborative practice agreement with on-site physician (as required)

  • Current CPR certification

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and general computer systems


Performance Expectations:

  • Ensure clinical systems and processes are followed in accordance with policies, procedures, and accreditation standards

  • Collaborate with HSA, Medical Director, and interdisciplinary clinical staff to coordinate patient care delivery

  • Independently utilize EHR systems and assist with training staff when requested

  • Communicate effectively across all levels of clinical, administrative, and operational teams

  • Demonstrate professionalism, emotional regulation, and adherence to clinical and ethical standards

  • Participate in meetings as required (monthly, quarterly, annually)

  • Provide comprehensive clinical evaluation and treatment of patients in a correctional healthcare setting, including:

    • Intake evaluations

    • Sick call

    • Chronic care management

    • Medical housing units

    • Mental health housing areas

    • Segregation units

  • Conduct histories and physical examinations, develop diagnoses, and implement treatment plans

  • Manage medical emergencies and provide immediate clinical intervention when required

  • Order, review, and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests in a timely manner

  • Provide consultation and support to nursing and medical staff, including review and countersignature of verbal orders

  • Coordinate off-site referrals and ensure continuity of care upon patient return

  • Participate in chronic care clinics and population health initiatives

  • Maintain formulary compliance and appropriate medication utilization

  • Ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation (SOAPE notes, progress notes, orders, etc.)

  • Support quality improvement and patient safety initiatives

  • Collaborate with custody staff, healthcare teams, and leadership to ensure safe and effective operations

  • Participate in emergency preparedness, disaster response, and facility drills

  • Support recruitment and onboarding of clinical staff as needed

  • Maintain strong professional relationships with internal teams and external partners
