Description

Position Summary

Provides comprehensive primary and preventive healthcare services to patients across the lifespan in accordance with established standards of practice and applicable Maryland regulations. Assesses, diagnoses, treats, and manages acute and chronic health conditions while promoting health education and disease prevention. Works collaboratively with physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. Supports and follows the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of Family Healthcare of Hagerstown.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including obtaining medical histories and performing physical examinations.
• Diagnose and treat acute, chronic, and preventive healthcare needs.
• Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans.
• Order, perform, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests and procedures as appropriate.
• Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with Maryland regulations and organizational policies.
• Provide preventive health services, screenings, immunizations, and patient education.
• Counsel patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, wellness strategies, and disease management.
• Document patient encounters accurately and timely within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Coordinate care with physicians, specialists, hospitals, community resources, and other healthcare professionals.
• Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement, and risk management activities.
• Maintain compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards.
• Protect the confidentiality of patient, employee, and organizational information.
• Foster positive and professional relationships with patients, families, providers, staff members, and community partners.
• Participate in continuing education and professional development activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of clinical operations and patient care.

Requirements

Position Qualifications

Education

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program required.
• Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program preferred or required according to licensing standards.

Experience

• At least one year of clinical experience in a medical office, primary care, urgent care, or related healthcare setting preferred.
• Other relevant clinical experience may be substituted.
• Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR) preferred.
• Ability to become proficient in the Center's EHR system.

Licensure/Certifications

• Current license or eligibility for licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Maryland required.
• Current Maryland Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS) registration required.
• Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification may be required based on assignment.

Physical and Mental Effort

Physical:

Moderate physical effort is required. Position involves prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and use of computer equipment. Requires manual dexterity for clinical procedures, documentation, and operation of medical equipment. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds occasionally. Duties may require extended periods of movement between exam rooms and clinical areas. Normal vision and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, are required to safely perform patient care responsibilities.

Mental:

Frequent periods of concentration, attention to detail, clinical judgment, and decision-making are required while assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients. Position requires the ability to manage multiple priorities, respond to interruptions, and adapt to changing patient needs in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Frequent interaction with patients, families, providers, and staff requires professionalism, empathy, effective communication, and sound judgment.

Sensory:

Must be able to effectively communicate in spoken English and possess the ability to read, write, and comprehend English. Requires visual acuity sufficient to assess patient conditions, review medical records, interpret diagnostic information, and safely perform clinical duties.

Environmental and Working Conditions

Work is performed in a modern, well-equipped healthcare clinic environment. Daily interaction with patients, family members, providers, staff members, students, and community partners is required. Frequent use of medical equipment, computers, electronic health records, and other healthcare technology is expected.

Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, bodily fluids, communicable illnesses, and other healthcare-related hazards may occur. Employees are required to utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to all infection control, OSHA, CDC, and organizational safety standards.

The position may involve exposure to demanding patient situations, frequent interruptions, and a fast-paced clinical environment. Adherence to patient confidentiality, safety protocols, and professional standards is required at all times.
