Family Violence Intervention Unit Victim AdvocateThe City of Raleigh Police Department is seeking a Family Violence Intervention Unit Victim Advocate. This is a non‑sworn specialized administrative role that involves counseling and referrals for victims and witnesses of family‑violence crimes. Responsibilities include coordinating victim/witness contacts, follow‑ups, scheduling, and counseling; liaising with the public, other departments, and outside agencies; preparing and reviewing oral and written reports; and using initiative and independent judgment to support victims through the criminal‑justice process.About YouCompassionate, resourceful, and professional advocate committed to supporting individuals and families during difficult moments.Excellent at building trust with victims, providing crisis intervention, and connecting them with resources.Communicates with empathy and confidence, balancing sensitivity with judgment in fast‑paced, emotionally challenging situations.Experienced in victim advocacy, counseling, social work, or a related field; skilled at collaborating with law enforcement, courts, and community agencies.Organized, detail‑oriented, and comfortable preparing reports, maintaining records, and managing multiple priorities.Dedicated to serving the community with integrity and professionalism, helping victims navigate the legal process and access services that promote safety, healing, and recovery.NoteOccasional weekend work may be required, but it is not a regular occurrence.ResponsibilitiesRespond to major family‑violence calls, assist officers and counselors in difficult situations.Coordinate contact with victim/witnesses, conduct follow‑up interviews, schedule and counsel them, and perform outreach services.Train and update counselors through regularly scheduled domestic‑violence meetings.Act as liaison for the department with victim/witness service agencies.Provide information on judicial processes, service agencies, and other community resources.Assist victims in completing court‑required paperwork (e.g., victim impact statements).Prepare written reports, memos, and correspondence.Support staff in researching and recommending alternative methods of providing family‑violence intervention services.Assess the needs of victims/witnesses.Attend community meetings and develop presentations on victim assistance programs.Perform related duties such as assisting victims in obtaining emergency food/shelter and arranging transportation to court.Education and ExperienceBachelor's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related field; 3–5 years of experience in victim advocacy, social casework, trauma counseling, or related field.OR any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.Licensing and CertificationsValid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge in:Department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.Police principles, practices, and procedures related to domestic disputes and family‑violence incidents.Applicable state, federal, and local laws and ordinances.Social work principles.Victim/witness programs and service agencies.Counseling and career‑development techniques.Skills in:Oral and written communication.Computer skills and maintaining a filing system.Compiling statistics and mandatory reports.Abilities to:Understand and execute directives and prepare comprehensive written reports.Deal courteously yet firmly with employees and the public.Counsel and refer victims/witnesses to appropriate service agencies.Analyze difficult situations and use sound judgment in decisions.Express ideas clearly, orally and in writing.Establish and maintain harmonious police‑public relations.Work Environment and Physical EffortSedentary work: must occasionally lift up to 10 pounds, frequently lift negligible loads, and may manually handle objects including human bodies.
