The College of Veterinary Medicine seeks candidates for a Farm Assistant position to perform general construction and maintenance of farm equipment and facilities that support routine care for animals. This position is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, being around farm animals, and all the tough jobs involved in farm work.
 
Typical shift is from 8am - 5pm Monday - Friday. An occasional weekend or holiday may be needed.

The formal AU title for this position is Tech, Ag-Vet Med

Responsibilities:
  • Performs general construction and maintenance of farm equipment, structures, and grounds, including, but not limited to the following:
  • Fences, stalls, barns, roads, ponds, farm buildings and lawn/field care specifically repair and construction of fences.
  • Perform routine tractor operations.
  • May handle pesticides, herbicides, and hazardous chemicals on a team or alone.
  • Provides routine animal care such as daily feeding, watering, cleaning/sanitation of stalls and barns, rotational grazing, monitoring health and safety of animals and transportation of animals to the proper location.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:

Level I: High school diploma or equivalent.

Level II: High school diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of relevant experience.

Level III: High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of relevant experience.

Level IV: High school diploma or equivalent plus 6 years of relevant experience.

 

License and Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license upon hire.
  • Ability to obtain a pesticide license may be required in specific positions.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Able to repair and construct fences.
  • Tractor operation.
  • Experience in hay management and harvesting.
  • Experience in care and well-being of livestock.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • This position involves physical demands such as the ability to stand and walk frequently.
  • The ability to climb, kneel, and reach is also necessary.
  • The ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. is required.
  • This position also requires working outdoors in heat and cold, wet, humid, and noisy conditions.
