Crops: Carrot, Summer Squash, Watermelon, Pumpkin, Cucumber, Onion,
Cabbage, Melon.
All work is performed in the farm field. This job includes a variety of
manual labor tasks, including but not limited to: tasks associated with
commodity production and harvest activities. Workers must be able to
perform manual activities with accuracy and efficiency; clean equipment
and storage facilities; and inspect and clean wooden storage crates. For
some crops, with a hand hoe, work the soil 7-8 inches deep to promote
good rooting. Preparing the field, dig trenches. Install plastic mulch
and drip tape. Till the soil to a suitable depth and remove any rocks or
debris. Add compost or organic matter to improve soil quality. Plant the
seed by hand. Transplant seeding by hand. Hand carries trays of
transplants down the field. Plant seeds in the mounds about 1 inch deep.
Plant seeds directly in the ground at the recommended spacing. Sow seeds
directly in the ground in shallow furrows, spacing them thinly. Cover
lightly with soil well. Hand-pull weeds close to the plants, hand hoe
around the plants to remove small weeds. Use a hoe to chop weeds from
plants and pull weeds by hand. Hand-weed around the base of the plants
to prevent competition for nutrients and water. Apply a layer of mulch
around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Install
irrigation houses when required. Direct the water stream to irrigate.
Install a drip irrigation system in the field. Maintain and level repair
drip irrigation systems and equipment. Assist with field harvest. Remove
the carrot from the ground manually. Manually pick, lift, and carry the
carrots to the truck at the end of the row. Cut the squash with a knife.
Classify by color, size, maturity, etc. Manually pick, lift, and put the
squash in a bag or box according to the customer's request. Carry
squash to the truck at the end of the row. Walk down the rows of the
field. Use a knife to cut ripe watermelons from the plant. Arrange the
watermelons in an organized row. Hand brings the watermelons to the
truck through the row. Use pruning shears to cut off pumpkins. Arrange
the pumpkins in an organized row. Hand brings the pumpkins to the truck
through the row. Select cucumbers that are firm, uniformly green, and
have reached the desired size, depending on the customer's request. Cut
off the cucumber with a sharp knife or scissors, leaving a short stem
attached. Cucumbers must be harvested continuously in multiple
"hands-sessions" (2-3 times per week). Pack cucumbers in crates or
cartons in quantities according to the customer's request. Lift and
bring the crates or cartons to the truck at the end of the row. Gently
lift the onions from the soil. Pack the onions in crates, cartons, or
bags in quantities according to the customer's request. With a sharp
knife, cut the cabbage head cleanly at the base of the plant, leaving a
few outer leaves attached. Pack cabbage in crates or cartons in
quantities according to the customer's request. To cut the melons from
the vine using a sharp knife, leaving a short stem attached. Pack melons
in crates or cartons in quantities according to the customer's request.
Manually unload crops from the truck. Ensure crops are properly packaged
and stored. Clean the field of forgotten materials or equipment, such as
gloves, clothes, etc. Other related duties: Repair fences, clean storage
areas, etc.
