Fellow and Associate/Deputy Director - Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program

JOB SUMMARY

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 275 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

The CSIS Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program is seeking a dynamic and creative Fellow and Associate Director/Deputy Director to advance our research agenda exploring European affairs and transatlantic relations, with a particular focus on energy security, emerging technology, climate policy, and economic competitiveness.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy and Research Leadership

• Provide strategic guidance for project activities related to the CSIS Powering Forward Initiative and key programmatic workflows, through idea cultivation, proposal development, execution of research and deliverables, and project management.
• Assist in shaping the program’s research strategy and overseeing day-to-day operations, including in fundraising operations, donor relationship management, communication with other external stakeholdersAuthor and edit high-quality reports, commentaries, articles, op-eds, and policy analyses to advance research findings and objectives.
• Collaborate with the Program Director and Staff to identify and define new areas of research and public engagement.

Outreach and Engagement

• Serve as a prominent voice on energy, technology, and climate policy, promoting the program’s analysis (including your own) to a diverse set of stakeholders, including government officials, policymakers, journalists, and the public.
• Engage with senior European and U.S. officials on issues related to energy security, emerging technology, climate policy, and economic competitiveness.
• Contribute to national and international energy conversations through participation in conferences, workshops, and donor engagements.
• Build and maintain a robust professional network, liaising with external experts, non-resident affiliates, peer organizations, and academic researchers.
• Conceive and lead events such as conferences, panels, roundtables, and podcasts to disseminate the program’s research and insights.

KNOWELDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

• Experience: 4+ years of increasingly independent or responsible experience in public policy development and research within industry, analytical or research communities, or government. Supervisory experience is preferred, as is experience with bipartisan groups of policymakers or experts.
• Expertise: Respected authority with substantial knowledge and a robust network in Europe on energy or climate issues, with a particular interest in expertise related to geopolitics, trade, or energy markets.
• Skills: Entrepreneurial mindset with a proactive approach to identifying challenges, setting priorities, and implementing policy-relevant solutions. Experience with fundraising or grant management.
• Communication: Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills; proficient public speaker capable of engaging with media, industry, and government stakeholders.
