    Position Summary

    The Fiber Optic Construction Laborer supports the installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic networks. This is a hands-on field position responsible for assisting fiber placing crews, equipment operators, foremen, and other team members with the safe and efficient completion of assigned projects.

    The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-minded, willing to learn, and comfortable working outdoors in a physically demanding construction environment. This position may require occasional travel, overtime, nights, weekends, or emergency work depending on project and customer needs.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assist with the installation and placement of aerial and underground fiber optic cable.
    • Support fiber placing crews with cable pulling, handling, staging, setup, cleanup, and other construction activities.
    • Assist with loading, unloading, organizing, and transporting tools, materials, equipment, cable reels, and supplies.
    • Set up and maintain work zones, traffic-control devices, cones, barricades, and other required safety equipment.
    • Assist with hand digging, trench preparation, potholing, conduit work, handholes, vaults, and other underground construction activities as assigned.
    • Assist crews working around utility poles, aerial cable routes, bucket trucks, cable trailers, and fiber placement equipment.
    • Operate hand tools and portable power tools safely and in accordance with company policies and manufacturer requirements.
    • Maintain tools, vehicles, trailers, and equipment in clean and serviceable condition.
    • Perform daily jobsite setup and cleanup and maintain an organized work area.
    • Follow project plans, prints, maps, construction instructions, and direction from the Foreman or Supervisor.
    • Identify and report damaged facilities, unsafe conditions, equipment problems, or project concerns to supervision.
    • Follow all company safety policies, customer requirements, and applicable OSHA regulations.
    • Properly use and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Participate in daily safety meetings, job briefings, and training.
    • Work safely around existing underground and aerial utilities.
    • Assist with collecting basic field information and project documentation when requested.
    • Support other crews and departments as needed to meet project schedules and company objectives.
    • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

    Qualifications

    • Previous construction, utility, telecommunications, or fiber optic experience is preferred but not required.
    • Willingness to learn fiber optic construction methods and industry standards.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew.
    • Strong work ethic, dependability, and attention to safety.
    • Ability to safely use common hand and power tools.
    • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record preferred.
    • Ability to report to work reliably and work varying schedules based on project requirements.
    • Willingness to travel occasionally when required.

    Physical Requirements

    This position requires regular physical activity in outdoor construction environments. Employees must be able to:

    • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, climb, reach, push, and pull.
    • Lift and carry construction materials, tools, equipment, and cable.
    • Perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
    • Work around uneven terrain, trenches, utility structures, vehicles, and construction equipment.
    • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, snow, and other environmental conditions.
    • Safely work around active roadways, utility rights-of-way, construction sites, and telecommunications facilities.

    Work Environment and Schedule

    The Fiber Optic Construction Laborer primarily works in outdoor field environments. Work locations may change frequently depending on project requirements. Employees may be required to work extended hours, overtime, nights, weekends, or emergency shifts when necessary.

    Occasional out-of-town travel and overnight stays may be required depending on project location and workload.

    Safety Expectations

    Safety is a condition of employment. The Fiber Optic Construction Laborer is expected to actively participate in maintaining a safe workplace by following company procedures, wearing required PPE, attending safety meetings, identifying hazards, and immediately reporting unsafe conditions, incidents, injuries, or equipment concerns.

    Employees are expected to stop work and contact their Foreman or Supervisor whenever a task cannot be completed safely.
