Position Overview

ZiBiz Corporation, an established technology company located in Hauppauge, NY, is seeking an experienced Fiber Optic Solutions Engineer / Designer to design custom fiber optic solutions for our customers.

This is not primarily a fiber installation or field technician position. The successful candidate will work directly with customers, sales personnel, manufacturers, and our internal technical team to understand customer requirements and develop complete fiber optic solutions tailored to each application.

We are looking for someone who can take a customer requirement from concept through a complete technical solution-including system architecture, fiber and connector selection, optical link design, equipment selection, drawings, Bill of Materials (BOM), testing requirements, documentation, and technical support.

The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of relevant fiber optic design, engineering, applications, or solutions experience and a strong practical understanding of fiber optic systems and components.

Key Responsibilities

Custom Fiber Optic Solution Design

• Interact with customers and sales personnel to understand technical and operational requirements.
• Translate customer requirements into complete, practical fiber optic solutions.
• Determine appropriate fiber type, fiber count, cable construction, connectors, transceivers, patching, enclosures, distribution hardware, and related components.
• Design fiber solutions for data center, enterprise, telecommunications, industrial, campus, and other network environments.
• Develop point-to-point and structured fiber connectivity solutions.
• Design solutions involving fiber patch panels, cassettes, enclosures, splice trays, distribution frames, trunks, harnesses, breakout assemblies, and custom cable assemblies.

Fiber Engineering & Technical Analysis

• Calculate optical power/link-loss budgets and verify that proposed designs meet system requirements.
• Evaluate fiber distance, attenuation, connector loss, splice loss, wavelength, bandwidth, transceiver requirements, and system margins.
• Understand and specify duplex, parallel-optics, breakout, polarity, and high-density fiber architectures.
• Evaluate compatibility among fiber cable, connectors, transceivers, network equipment, and customer infrastructure.
• Develop testing and acceptance requirements for completed solutions.

Solution Documentation & Bill of Materials

• Develop complete Bills of Materials (BOMs) for custom fiber optic solutions.
• Prepare system diagrams, connectivity drawings, fiber schedules, rack elevations, and other technical documentation as required.
• Create clear technical specifications that can be used for purchasing, assembly, installation, testing, and customer approval.
• Work with purchasing and manufacturers to identify appropriate products and alternatives.

Customer & Sales Engineering Support

• Serve as a technical resource for customers and the ZiBiz sales team.
• Participate in customer calls and technical meetings to determine requirements and recommend solutions.
• Assist sales personnel with technical proposals, quotations, Statements of Work, and solution presentations.
• Review customer RFQs, RFPs, drawings, specifications, and technical requirements.

Required Qualifications

• 3-5 years of professional experience designing, engineering, specifying, or supporting fiber optic solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to develop fiber optic solutions based on customer requirements.
• Experience creating technical designs and Bills of Materials for fiber optic systems.
• Strong understanding of optical power budgets, attenuation, insertion loss, reflectance, connector loss, splice loss, wavelengths, and system margins.
• Experience selecting fiber cable, connectors, transceivers, patch panels, enclosures, cassettes, splice components, and related passive fiber infrastructure.
• Understanding of fiber polarity and high-density/parallel-optics applications.
• Ability to read and create technical drawings, network diagrams, connectivity diagrams, and system documentation.
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers, sales personnel, engineers, manufacturers, and technical staff.

The Person We're Looking For

We are looking for a fiber optic problem solver, not simply someone who can install or terminate fiber.

A customer may come to us with an application, a network problem, a drawing, an equipment list, or simply a description of what they are trying to accomplish. We need someone who can ask the right technical questions, understand the customer's objectives and constraints, and turn that information into a complete fiber optic solution.

The successful candidate will be able to take ownership of this process-from the initial customer discussion through solution design, BOM development, quotation support, implementation, testing, and final technical documentation.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $80,000-$90,000 per year, depending on experience, technical capabilities, certifications, and qualifications.
