About the Job
Bancroft Construction Services is seeking an experienced Field Biologist (General Biological Monitor or Designated Biologist) to support environmental compliance and construction monitoring for projects in and around Fresno County, CA. This role is ideal for a motivated biologist with strong Swainson’s hawk experience who thrives in dynamic field environments and enjoys working collaboratively with construction and environmental teams.
This is a full-time position with consistent project work across multiple active job sites.
Position Summary
This field-based role involves conducting focused species surveys—with an emphasis on Swainson’s hawk—monitoring construction activities, implementing avoidance and minimization measures, and documenting compliance with federal, state, and project-specific environmental permits. The position requires the ability to work independently in fast-paced outdoor and construction environments while coordinating closely with project teams.
Responsibilities
- Conduct focused surveys for special-status species, with a primary focus on Swainson’s hawk
- Perform nesting bird surveys and monitoring in accordance with regulatory requirements
- Provide biological construction monitoring and environmental inspections
- Conduct pre-construction surveys and ongoing compliance monitoring
- Implement avoidance and minimization measures (WEAPs, ESAs, buffers, exclusion zones)
- Monitor and maintain wildlife exclusion fencing
- Collect and manage field data using GPS and mobile applications (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps, Fulcrum)
- Prepare accurate daily logs, reports, and compliance documentation
- Coordinate directly with construction crews, project managers, and environmental staff
Qualifications & Skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field
- Minimum 2+ years of field biology or construction monitoring experience
- Demonstrated experience with Swainson’s hawk surveys and monitoring
- Experience conducting nesting bird surveys and implementing buffers
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License and ability to travel independently throughout the region
- Ability to work outdoors in variable weather and terrain conditions
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills
- Flexible schedule, including early mornings, weekends, and potential travel
- U.S. Citizenship required
Preferred Qualifications
- Designated Biologist or General Biological Monitor authorization
- Experience working on large-scale infrastructure or transportation projects
- Familiarity with Central Valley and Inland Empire habitats and species
- Experience working directly with contractors and leading compliance efforts
Work Environment
This position is field-intensive and may involve:
- Long hours outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Walking or hiking on uneven terrain while carrying field equipment
- Working in active construction sites around heavy equipment
- Regular travel to the Cantua Creek, CA area
Compensation & Employment Status
- Hourly Rate: $45–$60/hour (based on experience and qualifications)
