Field Controls Commissioning Engineer (Thermal Systems)

A day in this role
Imagine starting your morning reviewing an AutoCAD update to a boiler control panel, then heading to a customer site to bring a new system online. By lunch, you’re fine‑tuning a Siemens or Allen‑Bradley PLC sequence for a burner. In the afternoon, you’re mentoring a field technician through a complex interlock issue and closing the day by drafting clear operating procedures that will live in the customer’s manual. You own the automation performance end‑to‑end—and you see the immediate impact of your work in the field.
Travel: Up to 80% to customer sites; occasional international travel based on project needs.
What you’ll do
- Engineer and review control architectures for industrial, electrode, and electric boiler product lines.
- Lead and support field commissioning alongside Field Technicians at customer facilities.
- Create clear schematic wiring diagrams using current AutoCAD toolsets.
- Develop PLC logic for boilers and burners (Siemens, Allen‑Bradley), including sequencing, alarms, and interlocks.
- Select instrumentation and components to align with customer specifications and regulatory codes.
- Ensure designs comply with NEC, NFPA, UL, and CSA requirements.
- Troubleshoot control systems and PLC programs both remotely and on site; execute repairs as needed.
- Author technical documentation—system descriptions, operating procedures, and user instructions—for customer manuals.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally: shape new product options with marketing, advise service teams, qualify alternates with purchasing, and improve manufacturing processes to reduce scrap and increase throughput.
- Coach and train field service personnel and early‑career controls designers/programmers.
Qualifications
- BS in Electrical Engineering or comparable technical background.
- 2+ years of PLC programming experience (Siemens and Allen‑Bradley).
- 3–5 years of electrical engineering experience.
- Fluent in reading mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation drawings.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Access).
- Proficient with AutoCAD for creating and editing schematics.
- Preferred: familiarity with ASME Pressure Vessel Codes, boilers, heat‑transfer equipment, or auxiliary boiler room systems; boiler industry background is a plus.
Physical demands
- Extended periods at a computer for design and documentation work.
- Hands‑on site work, including standing, kneeling, and operating in confined areas.
- Frequent travel.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Occasional exposure to outdoor weather and industrial environments.
