RANGE POSITION DESCRIPTION

The candidate filling this position will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and modification of electronic instrumentation systems and associated support equipment used in test, measurement, and operational avionics environments. This position requires independent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in both backshop and field environments. This role requires heavy lifting as necessary to support shop operations.

The potential candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of electronic systems and principles, including signal flow, circuit operation, fault isolation, and system-level troubleshooting down to the circuit board level utilizing specialized equipment such as a Huntron Tracker, Oscilloscope (O-scope), and multimeters. The position requires experience with radio frequency (RF) systems, RF hazard awareness, transmission lines, antennas, and associated test equipment used to evaluate and maintain communications and telemetry systems, including radar beacon transponder tuning.

Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in wiring harness fabrication and repair (including Cannon-plug repair), connector installation and termination techniques, cable continuity verification, and the interpretation of technical drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams. Experience with industry-standard connector types and cable assembly practices is highly desirable. Candidates must be able to perform mechanical teardown and reassembly strictly adhering to technical data.

A thorough understanding of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), including system operation, receiver functionality, signal characteristics, and related support equipment, is required. The individual will be expected to support GNSS-based instrumentation and positioning systems in operational, developmental, and troubleshooting capacities, including the programming of data cards for real-time recording under rigid Range parameters.

The position also requires strong computer skills, including familiarity with computer hardware, networking concepts, operating systems, and common software applications used for system configuration, data collection, analysis, and reporting. Experience with network troubleshooting, IP-based communications, and software installation and maintenance is preferred.

Candidates must possess advanced soldering skills sufficient to perform electronic component replacement, cable repairs, and connector terminations in accordance with accepted workmanship standards, specifically including the ability to solder utilizing a microscope for finite work. In addition, the position requires mechanical aptitude and the ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and test equipment to assemble, modify and maintain electronic and mechanical systems. The candidate must strictly adhere to Tool Control procedures, ESD work and grounding techniques, and the HazCom Program.

Cross-Utilization and Flightline Support (Secondary Duties):

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, capable of working independently with minimal supervision, and able to communicate effectively with engineers, technicians, customers, and operational personnel. To support broader contract flexibility, the candidate must demonstrate cross-utilization potential to support flightline operations when required. The candidate must possess or be able to obtain flightline driving privileges, CMA (Controlled Movement Area) qualifications, and Hydrazine Awareness certification.

Clearance and Training:

The candidate must possess or be able to obtain a DoD Secret clearance, and, if accepted, will be required to strictly adhere to Air Force and JT4 Quality Assurance and Safety guidelines across all scopes of work. The candidate must be willing to meet accelerated training milestone completion timelines as established upon hire.

REQUIREMENTS - EDUCATION, TECHNICAL, AND WORK EXPERIENCE

An associate’s degree in engineering or other technical discipline, or formal academic/vocational/military training and a minimum of 10 years of experience in the specialty field are required for this position.

In addition, a Field Engineer III must possess the following qualifications:

  • Broad knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices of engineering that enable senior technical contributor-level performance on complex projects or programs
  • Knowledge and skill sufficient to apply developments in engineering to solve problems in the specialty area
  • Working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs
  • Ability to investigate, troubleshoot, and design solutions to problems in operational hardware and software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Planning/organizational skills
  • Must possess a valid, state issued driver’s license
