Job Description

The Level 3 Installer/Field Engineer is responsible for installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintaining, and replacing telecommunications and critical infrastructure equipment in switching offices, data centers, and other customer facilities. This role requires strong hands-on experience with DC power systems, network and transmission equipment, structured cabling, and in-service device swaps or replacements with minimal service interruption.
The ideal candidate is a technically capable field professional who can work independently, follow detailed method-of-procedure documentation, lead complex installations, and provide clear technical updates to customers, project managers, and engineering teams.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform Level 3 installation, turn-up, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of telecommunications, network, and data center equipment.
  • Install, terminate, label, test, and troubleshoot copper, fiber-optic, coaxial, and other structured cabling systems.
  • Install and service -48 VDC power systems, power distribution units, fuse panels, breakers, bus bars, grounding, and equipment power feeds.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, floor plans, rack elevations, wiring diagrams, power distribution plans, and installation specifications.
  • Work in central offices, switching offices, head-ends, colocation facilities, data centers, and other mission-critical environments.
  • Perform in-service device swaps, replacements, migrations, and cutovers while protecting live services and maintaining strict change-control procedures.
  • Execute method-of-procedure steps, pre-checks, post-checks, rollback plans, and service verification for planned work.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, cabling, power, alarms, connectivity, and equipment integration issues using test equipment, management systems, and manufacturer documentation.
  • Install and replace routers, switches, servers, transport equipment, wireless or access equipment, shelves, cards, modules, power supplies, and related hardware.
  • Conduct fiber testing and certification using appropriate test equipment, such as optical power meters, light sources, and OTDRs.
  • Use multimeters and other electrical test equipment to verify DC voltage, polarity, continuity, resistance, and grounding conditions.
  • Coordinate with network operations centers, remote engineering teams, vendors, general contractors, and customer representatives during installations and outages.
  • Provide technical direction to lower-level installers and validate completed work for quality, safety, and compliance.
  • Maintain accurate installation records, test results, as-built documentation, punch lists, material usage, and closeout packages.
  • Identify site, power, cabling, or equipment risks before work begins and escalate issues that may affect schedule, safety, or service availability.
  • Follow all customer, company, OSHA, electrical-safety, ESD, fall-protection, and site-access requirements.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of experience in telecommunications installation, field engineering, network infrastructure, or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated Level 3 experience independently performing complex installations, troubleshooting, cutovers, and equipment replacements.
  • Hands-on experience with DC power systems in telecommunications or data center environments, including -48 VDC distribution and battery-backed systems.
  • Experience working in switching offices, central offices, headends, or comparable telecommunications facilities.
  • Experience working in data centers or other high-availability, mission-critical facilities.
  • Proven experience performing in-service device swaps or replacements on live networks or production infrastructure.
  • Ability to follow and document detailed methods of procedure while maintaining service continuity and rollback readiness.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, rack elevations, schematics, cable maps, and equipment installation manuals.
  • Working knowledge of fiber-optic and copper cabling, labeling standards, grounding, bonding, and rack-and-stack practices.
  • Proficiency with common test equipment, including digital multimeters, fiber testers, optical power meters, and tone-and-probe equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities in the field, and make sound decisions during time-sensitive work.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to customer and project sites as required.
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with major telecom, carrier, enterprise, or data center equipment platforms.
  • Manufacturer or industry certifications related to fiber optics, networking, telecommunications, electrical safety, or data center operations.
  • Experience with structured cabling standards, TIA/EIA practices, BICSI methods, or equivalent installation standards.
  • Experience leading small installation crews or serving as the on-site technical lead.
  • Familiarity with change-management systems, ticketing platforms, electronic test records, and customer-specific documentation tools.
  • Experience supporting emergency restoration, maintenance windows, or after-hours cutovers.
  • OSHA, First Aid/CPR, forklift, aerial lift, or other applicable safety certifications.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work may occur in active switching offices, data centers, rooftops, warehouses, construction areas, and customer facilities.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance for heavier items.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, work above raised floors, and work in racks or other confined work areas for extended periods.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and comply with ESD, electrical, and site-specific safety controls.
  • Availability for planned maintenance windows, occasional nights or weekends, emergency response, and travel as project needs require.
