Job Summary
As the Field Locator I, II, you will be responsible for locating, identifying, and marking underground utility infrastructure to support safe and accurate construction activities. You will use locating equipment, engineering prints, maps, and field documentation to protect existing utilities and ensure compliance with safety standards. Your customers include construction crews, project managers, utility owners, and clients, and you will contribute to project success through accuracy, safety, and efficient field operations.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to:)
- Locate, identify, and accurately mark underground utilities using electronic locating equipment, engineering drawings, maps, and utility records.
- Review locate tickets, blueprints, and work plans to identify existing utilities, construction conflicts, and safe excavation paths.
- Complete required field documentation, including job hazard analyses (JHAs), dig forms, locate records, and work tickets.
- Support construction operations by potholing utilities, planning bore paths, mixing drilling fluids, guiding drilling operations, and assisting with restoration activities.
- Maintain locating equipment, construction tools, vehicles, and ensure all work is completed in compliance with company safety standards.
- Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs.
Required Qualifications
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
- OSHA 10 Certification required.
Experience
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in utility locating, construction, telecommunications, or a related field.
- Experience reading blueprints, utility maps, locate tickets, and construction documents.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to safely locate underground telecommunications, electric, gas, water, sewer, cable TV, and other utilities using electronic locating equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to operate mapping systems, mobile technology, and work order management software.
- Ability to perform physical labor, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and travel to assigned job sites.
- Ability to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and respond to emergency call-outs as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in horizontal directional drilling (HDD), utility construction, or telecommunications infrastructure.
- Knowledge of construction terminology and underground utility installation practices.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, and work for extended periods.
- Work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, confined spaces, and around heavy equipment.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including safety boots, safety glasses, hard hats, and other applicable safety equipment.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment background screening, drug screening, and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, as applicable.
