Targeted HR Consulting is partnering with a respected heavy civil construction contractor to identify an experienced Field Mechanic to support its fleet of heavy equipment throughout Central South Carolina.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled mechanic who enjoys troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction equipment both in the shop and in the field. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, safety-focused, and experienced working with earthmoving equipment in demanding construction environments.

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.

Position Summary

The Field Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy construction equipment both in the shop and at active job sites. This position requires strong troubleshooting abilities, excellent mechanical knowledge, and the ability to work independently while supporting multiple construction operations.

Daily travel to project sites is expected.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance & Repair

  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine-related equipment issues

  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on heavy construction equipment

  • Complete field service calls and emergency repairs at active job sites

  • Test equipment following repairs to verify proper operation and minimize downtime

  • Perform light welding and fabrication as needed

Equipment Systems

Maintain and repair:

  • Diesel engines

  • Transmissions

  • Final drives

  • Hydraulic systems

  • Pneumatic systems

  • Brake systems

  • Electrical systems

Parts & Documentation

  • Read and interpret service manuals, schematics, technical drawings, and diagnostic information

  • Research, order, and track replacement parts

  • Accurately document labor, parts, consumables, and repair activities

  • Follow established maintenance procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Assist with development and improvement of maintenance procedures when appropriate

Operational Support

  • Support field operations with G.E.T. (Ground Engaging Tool) installation and replacement

  • Assist project teams with equipment-related troubleshooting

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment

  • Promote safe work practices and compliance with company policies

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience maintaining and repairing heavy construction equipment

  • Current CDL (Commercial Driver's License) required

  • Strong mechanical and diagnostic troubleshooting skills

  • Experience repairing heavy earthmoving equipment in construction environments

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, hydraulic schematics, and electrical diagrams

  • Clean driving record meeting company insurance requirements (no more than three moving violations within the past three years)

  • Ability to pass background screening, physical, and drug/alcohol testing, including random screenings

  • Strong communication and organizational skills

Preferred Experience

Experience working with:

  • Caterpillar equipment

  • Komatsu equipment

  • Electronic diagnostic software and onboard equipment systems

  • Welding and light fabrication

  • Heavy civil construction equipment fleets

Employees assigned to projects located more than 70 miles from their residence are eligible for the company's daily per diem program.
