Join a leading organization in the electric utility industry as a Distribution Instructor Relay and Controls, delivering classroom, hands-on, and field-based training to apprentices, journeyman relay technicians, and other utility personnel. This role focuses on developing technical expertise, safe work practices, and professional standards for distribution and transmission operations.
Distribution Instructor Relay and Controls Responsibilities
Deliver classroom and hands-on instruction covering electrical theory, relay and controls, system operations, construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safe work practices.
Train employees on OSHA, NESC, NEC, NFPA 70E, utility safety practices, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Demonstrate and supervise proper use of tools, equipment, aerial lifts, climbing techniques, and rigging procedures.
Facilitate field-based training involving distribution and transmission systems, equipment operation, hazard recognition, and troubleshooting.
Evaluate trainee performance through written assessments, practical demonstrations, and field observations.
Provide mentoring, coaching, and constructive feedback to support employee development.
Maintain lesson plans, training records, course assignments, facilities, equipment, and training hardware.
Collaborate with instructors and operational leaders to ensure consistent, high-quality training programs.
Support safety initiatives, workforce development projects, and storm restoration efforts as needed.
Distribution Instructor Relay and Controls Qualifications
Critical Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
5 7 years of relevant technical/field experience for Instructor III; 8 12 years for Instructor IV; or 12+ years for Instructor V.
Strong knowledge of utility work methods, distribution and transmission systems, equipment, and safety standards.
Thorough knowledge of OSHA, NESC, NEC, and NFPA 70E requirements and utility industry best practices.
Ability to operate aerial lifts and work at heights in varying weather conditions.
Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts.
Preferred Qualifications:
Technical training, instructional training, or adult-education certification.
Experience training, coaching, mentoring, or leading field crews.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, and training software.
Distribution Instructor Relay and Controls Working Conditions
The Distribution Instructor Relay and Controls will work across classroom, laboratory, simulation, training-yard, and field environments. Frequent standing, walking, climbing, and outdoor work are required. Travel up to 50% may be required.
