Job Description

Coordinates safety and emergency management services for a designated territory. Conducts safety/security inspections, investigations, and intruder drills. Assists with safety councils; generates reports of findings and recommends solutions to administrators/principals for mitigation and prevention strategies against hazard producing conditions, emergencies and/or losses. A Field Safety Inspector must work flexible hours, including evenings, staggering shifts, rotating schedules, holidays, weekends, and in emergency situations, as needed.

Field Safety Inspector 2, SEM - Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Conducts annual general safety and fire safety inspections to identify hazards and recommend appropriate corrective actions. Prepares reports for administrators/principals and follow-up as needed. Supports the effectiveness of the district-wide comprehensive safety and loss prevention program.
  • Conducts employee accident investigations of workers compensation claims resulting in lost time and prepares reports for administrators/principals of accident facts and deductive causations and provides recommendations to identify, reduce, and control accident trends/losses.
  • Conducts security intruder drills at predetermined campuses to assess and rank the overall readiness of the districts'' emergency/crisis management plan and visitors'' policy against unauthorized intruders and prepares reports for submission to administrators/principals and follow-up as needed.
  • Monitors and evaluates fire exit drills, shelter in place drills, and disaster drills at campus/non-campus facilities and submits reports to administrators/principals with recommendations.
  • Attends regular safety council meetings at campus/non-campus facilities and provides discussion leadership for an improved accident/loss control program, reviews history of loss trends for the site and recommends corrections or modifications that transmit a safe and secure learning and work environment for students and employees.
  • Provides assistance to school(s) and/or other district facilities during emergency situations that can include flexible hours and intermittent or prolonged sitting, standing, and stooping.
  • Travels to school(s) and departments throughout the district to conduct safety related inspections, provide training, and/or attend meetings with district personnel or emergency management organizations. Other duties as assigned.

Certifications/Licensure

At the discretion of the hiring manager, desired professional certifications may be substituted for the year of work experience requirement. Appropriate certifications include those from the National Fire Prevention Association, the National Safety Council, and Safety Management and/or Occupational Safety; Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator, Plumbing, OSHA, NIMS/ICS, FEMA, Playground, Pool Inspection, and Bleacher Inspection. WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

  • Work involves the application of moderately complex procedures and tasks that are quite varied. Independent judgment is often required to select and apply the most appropriate of available resources. Ongoing supervision is provided on an "as needed" basis.

  • No budget development activity is required.

  • Decisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job''s own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures, or services.

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS

  • Basic communication - very little communication required such as receiving basic instructions. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor, and co-workers in own department.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS

  • Takes routine or required customer actions to meet customer needs. Responds promptly and accurately to customer complaints, inquiries and requests for information and coordinates appropriate follow-up. May handle escalated issues passed on from coworkers or subordinates.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Work includes bending and stooping, and intermittent sitting, standing, and stooping for sustained periods of time. Ability to carry and/or lift objects weiging 15 to 45 pounds from one location to another.
