Job Title: Field Service Engineer - Servo-Hydraulic Testing Systems

Job Description

This Field Service Engineer role focuses on installing, maintaining, and repairing advanced servo-hydraulic testing systems for customers across the Midwest. Based in Michigan, the position combines hands-on electro-mechanical troubleshooting with both on-site and remote customer support. You will work closely with a global technical team to diagnose complex issues, perform system upgrades, and ensure that highly specialized testing equipment operates at peak performance. The role offers a mix of field travel, time in the local office, hybrid work when not at customer sites, and exposure to international teams and training opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Install servo-hydraulic testing equipment at customer facilities, ensuring proper setup, calibration, and handover to the customer.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on servo-hydraulic systems to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Diagnose and repair issues across hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, PLC, and software systems on complex testing equipment.
  • Interpret technical documentation, schematics, and system diagrams to support efficient troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Provide timely on-site technical support at customer locations throughout the Midwest, with a focus on automotive customers in Southeast Michigan.
  • Deliver remote technical support to customers, including phone and online assistance for diagnostics and issue resolution.
  • Coordinate with global engineering and support teams to resolve complex technical inquiries and deliver effective solutions.
  • Support customers with system upgrades, including planning, installation, testing, and verification of upgraded components or software.
  • Assist customers in identifying appropriate spare parts and provide informed service and maintenance recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed service reports and documentation following each field visit or remote support engagement.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, providing clear explanations of issues, repairs, and recommended next steps.
  • Collaborate with international colleagues during installations and complex projects, including working alongside overseas crews.
  • Contribute to a strong team culture by sharing knowledge, supporting peers, and participating in continuous improvement efforts.
  • Develop skills and experience to progress into lead roles for field service and installation projects over time.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience in a role requiring mechanical aptitude and hands-on work with various tools.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, including the ability to work with complex machinery and mechanical assemblies.
  • Basic to intermediate electrical skills, with the ability to work safely on electro-mechanical systems.
  • Experience with field service activities such as installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues involving hydraulics, mechanical components, electrical systems, and electronics.
  • Strong customer interface skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with customers during service visits.
  • Experience reading and interpreting technical documentation, schematics, and system diagrams.
  • Capability to work independently in the field, including at times being the sole representative on a customer site.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 50% of the time, primarily within the Midwest.
  • Organizational skills to maintain accurate service reports and documentation after field and remote support activities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with electronics and electro-mechanical systems is a significant plus.
  • Prior experience in a customer-facing technical support or service role is highly beneficial.
  • Comfort working with PLCs and software-based control systems is advantageous.
  • Interest in developing into a field service lead or installation lead role over time.
  • Openness to international collaboration and training, including potential multi-week training abroad.
  • Ability to contribute positively to a team-oriented culture and collaborate with both local and global colleagues.

Work Environment

This role is based in Michigan and involves approximately 50% travel, with the majority of customers located in Southeast Michigan, allowing most nights to be spent at home. Out-of-state travel occurs for an estimated 5-6 weeks per year. When not on customer sites, you will work in a small, close-knit office team located in a downtown setting, with hybrid work flexibility depending on workload. The field environment includes customer manufacturing and testing facilities, where you will sometimes work independently and other times alongside a team, including international crews during installations. The position includes the use of a company vehicle, typically a pickup truck, for travel to and from the office and customer sites, as well as a company cell phone. Work schedules can include periods of extended hours, such as six 10-hour days during installations or major projects, providing opportunities for overtime. The culture emphasizes teamwork, collaboration with global colleagues, and professional growth, including the possibility of a multi-week training program abroad once established in the role. Appropriate work attire will be required to safely and professionally represent the company in both office and customer facility environments.
