Join an innovative organization working on large-scale energy storage technology that supports the reliability and future of the electrical grid. This opportunity offers the chance to take ownership of a significant utility-scale energy storage facility, develop strong customer relationships, and work with experienced technical teams. The role provides a combination of hands-on engineering, operational leadership, and flexibility to manage responsibilities both in the field and remotely as site operations mature.
Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer to support the operation, maintenance, and technical performance of a utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Southern California. This individual will serve as a primary technical and customer-facing resource, coordinating preventive maintenance, troubleshooting electrical and software-related issues, and overseeing third-party contractors and field technicians. The engineer will be responsible for maintaining site reliability, ensuring compliance with safety standards and contractual service requirements, and managing technical issues from initial diagnosis through resolution. Responsibilities also include supporting customer training, coordinating with internal engineering and operations teams, maintaining accurate service documentation, and managing maintenance activities through established systems and procedures. The position requires independent judgment, strong technical troubleshooting capabilities, and the ability to respond effectively to urgent operational needs. Initial on-site presence is expected to be approximately 50%, with greater remote flexibility possible as site operations stabilize.
Required Skills:
5+ years of experience in utilities, renewable energy, power generation, or energy equipment.
Strong electrical troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities in industrial or utility-scale environments.
Experience with electrical power systems, inverters, and medium- or high-voltage equipment.
Knowledge of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) or related renewable energy and power generation technologies.
Experience diagnosing electrical, mechanical, and software-related equipment issues.
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
Knowledge of SCADA systems, industrial communications, and control system troubleshooting.
Understanding of electrical safety practices, including OSHA and NFPA 70E standards.
Ability to conduct root cause analysis and resolve complex technical issues.
Experience coordinating field service activities, maintenance work, and third-party contractors.
Ability to manage service documentation, maintenance records, and technical reporting.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with a customer-focused approach.
Ability to work independently, prioritize competing responsibilities, and respond to urgent service issues.
Willingness to work on-site as required, travel when necessary, and perform field duties in extreme environmental conditions.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field, or an accepted combination of technical education and equivalent experience.
Bonus/Soft Skills:
Direct experience supporting utility-scale BESS facilities.
Experience with solar, wind, or other grid-connected energy technologies.
Familiarity with HVAC systems used in industrial or energy storage environments.
Knowledge of Modbus, TCP/IP, and industrial networking protocols.
Experience with SAP or computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Experience with maintenance planning, inventory management, procurement, and quality control.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
Experience coordinating with network operations centers, engineering, warranty, and deployment teams.
Strong customer relationship management and the ability to communicate technical issues clearly.
Demonstrated safety leadership, sound judgment, and willingness to exercise stop-work authority.
Proactive, accountable, organized, and comfortable operating with minimal supervision.
Ability to remain composed under pressure and manage multiple operational priorities.
