    Description

    The Field Service Engineer Level 3 (FSE3) is a mid-level technician capable of independently performing standard maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting activities on electrical power distribution and critical power systems. This role assumes ownership of assigned scopes, supports commissioning and corrective work, leads portions of job execution, and mentors junior technicians.

    Core Responsibilities

    Maintenance & Testing

    • Independently perform preventive maintenance and testing on LV and MV switchgear, breakers, ATS, RPPs, and PDUs.
    • Execute insulation resistance, continuity, contact resistance, and basic functional testing with minimal supervision.
    • Perform breaker removal, inspection, and reinstallation under established procedures.
    • Support generator maintenance, load bank testing, and operational checks.
    • Perform transformer inspections, tap changes, and assist with oil sampling.

    Troubleshooting & Commissioning Support

    • Read and interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams to support troubleshooting.
    • Troubleshoot common electrical, mechanical, and control issues; escalate complex faults to FST4 or Field Engineer.
    • Support commissioning activities including pre-energization checks, point-to-point verification, and functional testing.
    • Assist with control wiring checks, interlock verification, and basic communication diagnostics.

    Safety & Compliance

    • Comply with all safety requirements including LOTO, arc-flash, energized work restrictions, job hazard analysis, and permits.
    • Participate in on-site safety briefings and follow safe work practices at all times.
    • Ensure work complies with applicable codes and standards (NFPA 70E, OSHA) and customer site-specific requirements.

    Mentorship & Job Leadership

    • Lead portions of job execution and oversee apprentices, FST1, and FST2 personnel on assigned tasks.
    • Share best practices and on-the-job training with less experienced team members.

    Customer & Documentation

    • Communicate progress and findings clearly to lead technicians, project managers, and customers as needed.
    • Document service activities, complete test records, and maintain accurate punch lists and field reports.
    • Coordinate with project managers and supply chain on parts and material needs.

    Required Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED required; technical school, military electrical training, or Associate's degree a plus.
    • 3-4 years of relevant field service experience with LV/MV switchgear, breakers, ATS, generators, or related electrical equipment.
    • Working knowledge of electrical safety practices including LOTO and arc-flash risk controls.
    • Proven ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and one-lines.
    • Ability to write clear field reports and maintain accurate test documentation.
    • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required, sometimes on short notice.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
    • Manufacturer/OEM training on switchgear, breakers, ATS, or generator platforms.
    • Familiarity with major OEMs (e.g., Eaton, ABB/Hitachi, Siemens, GE, Schneider, Caterpillar, Cummins, Kohler).
    • Exposure to control platforms (SEL, ComAp, Woodward) or PLCs.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Solid understanding of LV/MV electrical distribution systems, grounding, and protection concepts.
    • Proficient with electrical test equipment and torque tools.
    • Ability to troubleshoot common electrical and mechanical issues independently.
    • Strong safety compliance and documentation practices.
    • Clear communication skills with crew, customers, and leadership.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and mobile/field reporting tools.

    Tools & Technology

    • Multimeters, clamp meters, insulation resistance testers, contact resistance meters, and continuity testers.
    • Breaker test sets and basic relay test equipment as applicable.
    • Torque tools, mechanical gauges, and standard hand and power tools.
    • Mobile field service applications and document control/reporting systems.

    Working Conditions & Travel

    • Primarily field-based at customer facilities including industrial plants, utilities, data centers, commercial facilities, and substations.
    • Travel typically 50-80% depending on region and workload; may include nights, weekends, and emergency call-outs on short notice.
    • Work may be performed in confined spaces, on elevated platforms, in hot/cold environments, and around rotating machinery and energized equipment per safety rules.
    • Must be able to wear required PPE including arc-rated clothing, hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and fall protection as needed.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and move test equipment and tools.
    • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, climb ladders/stairs, and work at heights for extended periods.
    • Ability to differentiate conductor colors and indicator states and read instruments and displays.
