  • Position Summary

The Director of Field Services provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for all clinical and field-based experiences within the teacher preparation programs. The Director is responsible for the development, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of field placement systems that support candidate success, program quality, and compliance with state, accreditation, and institutional requirements.

The Director oversees the placement of students across teacher licensure programs and cultivates partnerships with school districts, private schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure high-quality clinical experiences. The Director leads the collection, analysis, and reporting of field experience data to inform program evaluation, strategic planning, accreditation, and continuous improvement efforts across the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences.

Working collaboratively with academic program directors, faculty, and university leadership, the Director plays a key role in advancing educator preparation initiatives, supporting accreditation activities, developing policies and procedures related to clinical practice, and ensuring alignment with state licensure standards and national accreditation requirements. The Director serves as the primary institutional leader for field services and represents the School in external partnerships, professional organizations, and workforce development initiatives.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities

A. Standard Report Functions and Decision Support (70%)

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all clinical and field-based experiences within the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences' educator preparation programs, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities, state licensure requirements, accreditation standards, and workforce needs.
  • Develop, maintain, and strengthen partnerships with P-12 public, private, and charter schools, educational agencies, and community stakeholders across Hawai'i to secure high-quality field placements and expand clinical learning opportunities for teacher candidates.
  • Serve as the School's primary liaison with educational leaders, state agencies, school districts, and professional organizations regarding field experiences, clinical practice, educator preparation requirements, and licensure-related initiatives.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of policies, procedures, and operational systems governing field placements, clinical practice experiences, and candidate licensure processes.
  • Direct the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of field experience, candidate performance, and licensure data to support program evaluation, accreditation reporting, strategic planning, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Collaborate with Program Directors, faculty, and university leadership to utilize field experience data to inform programmatic decision-making, candidate support initiatives, and educator preparation outcomes.
  • Oversee compliance with accreditation standards, state regulations, and institutional requirements related to clinical practice, field experiences, and licensure recommendations.
  • Recommend candidates for initial teacher licensure in the State of Hawai'i and ensure the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of all licensure-related processes.
  • Provide leadership for the development, revision, and implementation of field experience handbooks, policies, training materials, and operational procedures to ensure consistency and quality across all educator preparation programs.
  • Direct and oversee administrative processes related to field placements, contracts, compensation, documentation, and records management while ensuring effective utilization of university systems and resources.
  • Lead orientation, training, and communication efforts for teacher candidates, cooperating teachers, university supervisors, and school partners to ensure a shared understanding of program expectations, accreditation requirements, and clinical practice standards.
  • Support accreditation, assessment, and quality assurance initiatives through the preparation of reports, collection of evidence, analysis of outcomes data, and participation in institutional and programmatic review processes.
  • As assigned by the Dean, provide leadership for special initiatives, grant-funded projects, strategic partnerships, and educator workforce development programs that advance the mission and goals of the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences.

B. External Reporting (20%)

  • Build, compile, and submit special reports related to field services as requested by the Program Directors in the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences, the Dean, the University, or state or local agencies.
  • Create, monitor, and update affiliation agreements.

C. Other Duties (10%)

  • Serve as the instructor of record for Student Teaching courses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Education from an accredited institution.

Desired Education

  • Master's degree in Education from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience

  • Three years of experience as a classroom teacher.

Desired Experience

  • Experience in pre-service teacher education programs.
  • Experience in the Hawai'i Department of Education.

Required Skills

  • Detailed knowledge of Hawai'i Department of Education and Hawai'i Teacher Standards Board policies and requirements for licensure and accreditation of teacher education programs.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Required Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in data management and organization, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Google Drive applications.

Other Qualifications

  • Commitment to standards-based national educational practices.
  • Willingness to travel to neighbor islands.
  • A valid driver's license and a vehicle for use on the job.
  • Physical Requirements

Duties involve light work in office, campus, and community settings. The position requires intermittent sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, and climbing stairs. Must be able to lift approximately 10-20 pounds, traverse the campus with ease, and have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.

  • Other Requirements:
  • This is a full time, exempt position. Forty hours per week (M-F) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and a varying schedule.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
