The Field Service Technician III - Fiber Telecommunications is a contract position supporting the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mission-critical fiber optic telecommunications infrastructure. The technician will perform field-based work involving optical transport systems, IP networking, customer turn-ups, preventive maintenance, emergency restoration, and network troubleshooting. Work will take place in central offices, data centers, carrier hotels, customer facilities, and outdoor telecommunications environments, with occasional overnight travel and rotating on-call support. Key Responsibilities- Install, commission, test, troubleshoot, and maintain telecommunications network equipment.
- Perform OTDR, Ethernet, BER, and SONET acceptance testing.
- Install, clean, label, and test fiber optic patch cords.
- Turn up and troubleshoot DWDM, SONET, TDM, IP, and Ethernet equipment.
- Complete preventative and corrective maintenance on network infrastructure.
- Support emergency network restoration efforts.
- Troubleshoot customer service outages and transport network issues.
- Perform equipment installations, decommissioning, and preliminary site surveys.
- Maintain critical infrastructure including DC power systems, telecom facilities, and fiber infrastructure.
- Support metro and long-haul fiber networks as assigned.
- Complete site surveys, audit reports, maintenance records, and testing documentation.
- Participate in project meetings, conference calls, and rotating on-call afterhours support.
- Travel throughout Richmond, Virginia and surrounding areas, including occasional overnight travel.
- Maintain schedule flexibility for nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency restoration activities.
QualificationsRequired:- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 4 years of hands-on telecommunications field experience.
- Experience with DWDM, SONET, TDM, Ethernet, and/or IP transport equipment.
- Experience performing OTDR testing and telecommunications turn-ups.
- Strong troubleshooting and field installation experience.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass background screening.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work independently.
Preferred (Optional):- Experience with Optical Power Meter, Fiber Identifier, Fiber Scope, and Digital Multimeter.
- Experience testing 1G, 10G, 100G, and 400G circuits.
- Knowledge of RFC2544, RFC6349 (TrueSpeed), and Y.1564.
- Experience with DC power plants, high-voltage electrical systems, and critical facilities.

Additional DetailsThe base range for this contract position is $30 - $40 / per hour, depending on experience. Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hires of this position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
