Job Description

The Field Technician supports a variety of high‑power and hotel construction projects across eastern North Carolina by testing and evaluating construction materials at active job sites. This role plays a key part in ensuring materials meet quality and safety standards through field and laboratory testing of concrete, asphalt, soils, and other construction materials.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to construction job sites within approximately a one‑hour radius to perform on‑site testing and evaluation of construction materials.
  • Conduct concrete testing, including sampling, slump tests, air content tests, and preparation of test cylinders or other specimens as required.
  • Perform asphalt testing and inspection activities to verify compliance with project specifications and quality standards.
  • Carry out soil testing and soil sampling in the field to assess compaction, density, and other geotechnical properties.
  • Operate nuclear density gauges and related testing equipment safely and in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Document test results accurately, maintain clear and organized records, and communicate findings to project teams in a timely manner.
  • Assist with construction materials testing (CMT) activities in the field and, when needed, in a laboratory setting.
  • Handle, transport, and set up materials testing equipment and samples at various job sites.
  • Follow all safety protocols while working on active construction sites, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to site-specific safety rules.
  • Collaborate with project personnel and supervisors to support quality control and quality assurance efforts on high‑power and hotel construction projects.

Essential Skills

  • Experience working on or around construction sites with an understanding of basic construction practices and safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with construction materials testing, including concrete, asphalt, and soil testing, either through direct experience or related exposure.
  • Ability to perform concrete testing and inspection tasks, such as sampling and field testing.
  • Ability to conduct soil testing and soil sampling in the field.
  • Capability to operate or learn to operate nuclear density gauges and related testing equipment safely.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to record and report test data accurately.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive company trucks to various job sites.
  • High school diploma or some college coursework completed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Some college coursework in engineering or a related technical field is highly desirable.
  • Previous exposure to construction materials testing (CMT) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ACI standards and practices for concrete testing is a plus.
  • Comfort with material handling tasks, including loading, unloading, and setting up testing equipment.
  • Ability to work independently at job sites while maintaining clear communication with the broader project team.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple testing assignments and maintain proper documentation.

Work Environment

This role is field‑based and involves daily travel in company trucks to construction job sites within approximately a one‑hour radius of Greenville, North Carolina. Work is performed primarily outdoors on active construction sites, requiring regular exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, and typical construction noise and activity. The position involves hands‑on use of testing equipment such as nuclear density gauges and other materials testing tools, along with physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and setting up equipment and samples. The schedule offers additional flexibility and work‑life balance. Appropriate field attire and personal protective equipment are required in accordance with safety and site guidelines.
