About the role
As a Field Welder on the Field Operations team, you will perform the hands-on welding that turns engineering drawings into working nuclear hardware — in our Austin factory and at project sites in the field. You will weld stainless steel pressure vessels, piping, structures, and prototype hardware to approved procedures, working day-to-day alongside field engineers, machinists, and test technicians.
This role is a great fit for a skilled welder who wants to work on complex, high-reliability hardware, hold tight quality standards, and support installation and commissioning wherever Aalo builds. You will weld to procedure, help troubleshoot fit-up and joint issues at the bench, and contribute wherever needed to keep the build moving.
Responsibilities
- Perform manual and mechanized welding — primarily GTAW and GMAW — on stainless steel pressure vessels, piping, structures, and assembly fixtures in the shop and in the field.
- Weld to approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and maintain compliance with applicable codes such as ASME Section IX and AWS D1.6.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, weld symbols, and joint details, and set up parts for repeatable, high-quality welds.
- Prepare joints, control fit-up and alignment, and manage preheat, interpass, and shielding conditions to meet procedure requirements.
- Support orbital and mechanized GTAW where applicable, including setup and monitoring of automated welding systems.
- Work directly with field engineers, machinists, and assembly technicians to build, modify, and rework hardware, test rigs, and prototypes on tight timelines.
- Diagnose and resolve weld defects and fabrication issues at the bench; support root-cause analysis with the welding engineering team.
- Support NDE activities (RT, PT, UT, PAUT) and rework nonconformances to close out inspection findings.
- Maintain organized records of welds performed, procedure and material traceability, deviations, and inspection results.
- Support on-site installation, commissioning, and field repair at reactor and test facilities, with travel as required.
- Maintain and pursue welder qualifications and certifications as the team and project scope grow.
Basic Qualifications
- Completion of a welding program, trade certification, or equivalent hands-on welding experience.
- 3+ years of hands-on welding experience, including GTAW on stainless steel.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, weld symbols, and joint configurations.
- Experience welding to written procedures (WPS) and holding tight quality standards.
- Basic familiarity with powered and manual tools.
- Strong ownership mindset, attention to detail, and clear communication; comfortable working with ambiguity in a fast-iterating environment.
- Air-travel-compliant form of ID and a valid Driver's License.
Preferred Experience
- Stainless steel TIG (GTAW) experience on pressure-boundary applications.
- Current or prior AWS or ASME Section IX weld qualifications.
- Experience with orbital, mechanized, or robotic welding in a production environment.
- Experience welding zirconium, titanium, or Inconel, including under inert-atmosphere conditions.
- Familiarity with NDE methods and interpreting inspection results.
- Background in nuclear, aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability regulated industries.
- Hands-on fabrication experience beyond welding (machining, sheet metal, assembly, rigging).
Physical Requirements
- Comfortable working on the factory floor and in industrial, construction, and remote field environments.
- Physically fit for duty — capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and standing, climbing ladders, and working for extended periods while wearing PPE.
- Willingness to weld at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather or environmental conditions when trained and authorized.
- Willingness to perform sustained hands-on welding, fabrication, and assembly work.
