Position Summary

Salary: $39,759.00 to $57,251.00 based on ACCS Board of Trustees Salary Schedule E3 04 and experience

The Financial Aid (FA) office of Jefferson State Community College (JSCC) is dedicated to maximizing student success in their postsecondary education pursuit by minimizing financial barriers. While the primary responsibility of paying for college lies with the student and the student's family, JSCC FA offers a variety of aid sources such as grants, loans, scholarships, and work study to assist as many qualified students as possible. Our office strives to assist students in covering the cost of their main educational expenses as best as possible.

The purpose and duty of a Financial Aid Information Specialist is to perform a variety of functions in the Financial Aid Office that includes providing support for students in need. This mainly focuses on, but is not limited to, students in need of financial assistance, interdepartmental collegiality, and a network of relationships with various external agencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Serve students via phone, email, and in-person meetings to address complex financial aid questions or concerns and communicate documents.

  2. Communicate with students about financial aid matters (documents, regulations, procedures, helpful tips etc.).

  3. Assist students with the completion of financial aid applications and submitting other documents required for aid eligibility determination

  4. Process, evaluate, and track submitted student documents using appropriate recordkeeping systems (Banner, Dynamic Forms, OpenText, etc.)

  5. Collaborate with various departments as a reliable financial aid resource

  6. Review imported Department of Education files daily and process documents in a timely manner.

  7. Maintain eligibility for access to the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid systems (FPP, COD, NSLDS, etc.)

  8. Review data provided in departmental, federal, state, and other external systems to determine student's eligibility for aid.

  9. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of financial aid regulations and apply that knowledge to individual student situations

  10. Assist with the administering of Scholarship, Grant, FSEOG, and Direct Loan awards, including evaluating student eligibility, processing awards, data entry, and communicating with recipients

  11. Perform the various reporting and processing functions.

  12. Attend community FAFSA and Financial Aid related events, and other College functions as a representative of Jefferson State Financial Aid - Day and Evening

  13. Cross trains in all aspects of the Financial Aid Office as needed

  14. Travels occasionally for off-site training conferences (both in- and out-of-state)

  15. Complies with all policies of the U.S. Department of Education, the Alabama Community College System, the College, and the Financial Aid Office

  16. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Marginal Functions

  • Assist with the processing of Financial Aid Transcripts.
  • Train and supervise student workers and L-19 employees to assist with filing, document processing, and front desk customer service.
  • Visit high schools and talk with external and on-campus groups and organizations about financial aid programs.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic mathematical skills necessary to compute and verify students' awards.
  • Sufficient computing and keyboarding skills necessary to load student financial data and access student information digitally.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to learn to use newly adapted technology necessary for essential job functions.
  • Ability to learn and perform all essential job functions accurately with minimal direct supervision.

Qualifications

Education: Associate degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred. May substitute two years of related work experience for one year of education up to a maximum of four years education equivalency. For example, four years of related work experience will be equivalent to an associate degree - four years must be verified. For clarification, please contact Human Resources.

Experience: A minimum of one year of full-time work experience in an office environment where the required knowledge, skills, and abilities were utilized is required.

Sick Leave

Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:

  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
