8:00 am - 5:00 pm; Monday - Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours required, as necessary.

This position may be eligible for a telework schedule once onboarding into the position is complete, and with supervisor approval.

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of the Financial Aid Compliance Counselor position is to:

  • Manage daily, weekly, and monthly reports associated with the Office of Financial Aid, involving but not limited to awarding, residency, unusual enrollment, and semester enrollment
  • Support the review and processing of daily, weekly, and monthly reports associated with all state funding, involving, but not limited to, State of North Carolina grants, loans, and scholarships (NextNC, Children of Wartime Veterans Grant, Teaching Fellows Loan Program, State Forgivable Loans, etc.)
  • Run and monitor ISIR dataload processing and associated federal aid processing activities.
  • Analyze and resolve suspense records, discrepancy records, conflicting information, comment codes, and C-flags.
  • Process FAFSA corrections and monitor correction results to ensure accurate federal aid eligibility.
  • Run and monitor Transfer Monitoring and Financial Aid History (FAH) processes and resolve resulting eligibility issues.
  • Research, interpret, and apply federal, state, and institutional financial aid regulations.
  • Offer guidance to students, parents, staff, and campus partners regarding financial aid policies and procedures through individual meetings and outreach. • Support student success by ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely financial aid processing.
  • Collaborate with campus and outside partners to ensure effective and timely processing of financial aid.
  • Fulfill assigned responsibilities that enhance regulatory compliance, operational effectiveness, and student service within the Office of Financial Aid.

Minimum Education/Experience

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school and one year of related office experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Support student success by ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely financial aid processing.
  • Collaborate with campus and outside partners, including the Registrar's Office, Student Services, Niner Central, University Communications, IT, Graduate School, NCSEAA, CFNC, and other state agencies.

Other Work Responsibilities

  • Perform other job duties and special projects as assigned or directed.
  • Research federal and state rules and regulations concerning financial aid eligibility.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of office policies and procedures.
  • Review student records to make informed decisions regarding aid eligibility and compliance.
  • Collect and analyze data to support operational needs and reporting.
  • Meet internal time service deadlines and critical federal and state deadlines.
  • Provide guidance to students by a variety of means, including in person, by phone, and email, ensuring accurate and supportive assistance.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Experience in a higher education/student services setting, preferred in Financial Aid
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations and policies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated customer service focus, experience facilitating presentations and events for internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrated exceptional attention to detail in high-volume environments, precision, and accuracy. Ability to critically think and independently problem solve while exercising professional judgement to escalate to management when necessary.
  • Banner experience is preferred.
