Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on, commercially minded Financial Controller to lead the company’s financial accounting and human resources operations as SmartFlower scales its U.S. and international sales activities.  The Financial Controller will be responsible for managing day-to-day accounting while also helping senior leadership make better business decisions through clear and accurate financial reporting, cost analysis, margin tracking, cash forecasting, and operational discipline.  The position also oversees human resources, information technology functions, and office administration.

 

This role requires someone who is detail-oriented, practical, and entrepreneurial. They should be comfortable working in a growing company environment where systems, processes, and controls need to be built, improved, and maintained. The role is in-office at our Back Bay office in Boston, Massachusetts

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including all banking and finance actions, foreign currency transactions, accounts payable and accounts receivable billing and collections, multi-national payrolls, and expense reporting.
  • Own the company’s general ledger, month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial statements.
  • Maintain accurate books and prepare timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports in accordance with GAAP, IFRS, and other applicable accounting standards.
  • Assist outside accounting firms with monthly VAT reporting, audit coordination, and income tax filings.
  • Support the CEO and senior leadership in preparing annual budgets, financial forecasts, and cash flow projections.
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls appropriate for a growing company.
  • Improve financial processes, reporting cadence, approval workflows, and documentation.
  • Coordinate with outside accountants, tax advisors, auditors, payroll providers, insurance brokers, and other professional advisors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Highly accurate and detail-oriented.
  • CPA preferred but not required.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
  • Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or senior finance role experience preferred.
  • Experience in a growth-stage company, equipment business, renewable energy, manufacturing, distribution, construction, or project-based business strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing human resources, information technology, and office administration staff a plus.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial statements, internal controls, and month-end close.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, or similar accounting systems.
  • Experience with inventory, landed cost, project accounting, sales commissions, or multi-entity/international transactions is a plus.
  • Strong Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Comfortable managing both high-level financial reporting and hands-on accounting tasks.
