Our client in central Houston is seeking a Financial Controller to oversee both accounting and financial planning functions for its chemicals manufacturing platform. This role will own key finance responsibilities including monthly close, financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
Working closely with the CFO and senior leadership, the position will provide both historical financial reporting and forward-looking insights to support strategic decision-making. The role also partners cross-functionally with Operations, Commercial, and leadership teams to translate business performance and operational data into actionable financial strategy, with direct impact on plant performance, capital planning, and long-term growth initiatives.

Responsibilities: 
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
  • Prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements and ensure accuracy across all financial reporting.
  • Maintain general ledger integrity, chart of accounts, and ERP (Sage) financial data accuracy.
  • Oversee inventory accounting, standard costing, manufacturing cost variances, and fixed asset accounting activities.
  • Manage AP, AR, payroll accounting, treasury, and cash management processes.
  • Coordinate external audits, tax compliance activities, and technical accounting research and documentation.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls while identifying and resolving process gaps.
  • Own annual budgets, rolling forecasts, and long-range planning with a focus on manufacturing costs, margins, and cash flow.
  • Partner with Operations and Supply Chain teams to incorporate production plans, feedstock assumptions, energy costs, maintenance activity, and capital planning into forecasts.
  • Perform detailed budget-to-actual variance analysis and identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Prepare management and board reporting packages with meaningful insights and recommendations.
  • Build and maintain financial models to evaluate capital projects and strategic initiatives.
  • Analyze the impact of production changes, market conditions, pricing, and costs on business performance.
  • Support investment decisions through NPV, IRR, payback, and scenario analysis.
  • Track KPIs and drive process improvements to enhance reporting, operational efficiency, and profitability.

Requirements:
  • 6–10 years of progressive accounting, controllership, and FP&A experience
  • Public accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA preferred.
  • Background in manufacturing, chemicals, or other asset-intensive industries preferred.
  • Strong technical accounting background with solid knowledge of US GAAP, including manufacturing-related areas such as inventory, standard costing, fixed assets, leases, and revenue recognition.
  • Experience owning the full monthly close process within a manufacturing or asset-intensive environment.
  • Strong financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, and analytical skills.
  • Advanced Excel capabilities, including complex modeling and large data analysis.
  • Hands-on ERP experience
  • Experience coordinating external audits and partnering with tax and audit firms.
  • Proven ability to own close processes while supporting forecasting and board-level reporting.
