Job Summary

Join our dynamic team as a Herd Technician. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining the daily care, safety, and management of farm animals, ensuring they thrive in a healthy environment. We are looking for herd technicians in the Willard and Ivanhoe area (Pender County). You will be required to obtain knowledge in both the breeding and farrowing department.

Breeding Department

Detect and identify sows and gilts in estrus (heat).

Perform artificial insemination (AI) according to farm protocols.

Assist with boar exposure and heat-check procedures.

Maintain accurate breeding and reproductive records.

Monitor breeding performance and identify repeat breeders.

Conduct or assist with pregnancy checks.

Select and develop replacement gilts for breeding.

Monitor sow body condition and reproductive health.

Administer vaccinations and treatments as directed.

Report health concerns, injuries, or abnormal reproductive performance.

Ensure proper feeding and water availability for breeding and gestating females.

Maintain cleanliness and organization of breeding areas and equipment.

Farrowing Department

Prepare farrowing rooms, crates, and equipment before sow entry

Monitor sows closely before, during, and after farrowing.

Assist with farrowing and difficult deliveries when necessary.

Provide newborn piglet care, including drying, warming, and ensuring colostrum intake.

Process piglets according to farm protocols, including identification, iron injections, vaccinations, and other required procedures.

Perform cross-fostering to balance litter sizes and maximize piglet survival.

Monitor sow feed intake, water consumption, and overall health during lactation.

Observe piglets daily for signs of illness, injury, or poor performance.

Administer treatments as directed and maintain treatment records.

Prepare piglets for weaning and assist with piglet movement to nursery facilities.

Record farrowing, mortality, and weaning data accurately.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not requird.

Previous swine production experience preferred but not rquired.

Knowledge of breeding, farrowing, and animal husbandry practices is a plus.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and flexible schedules as needed.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds throughout the workday.

Comfortable working around livestock in a farm environment.

Ability to perform repetitive tasks and work in varying temperatures and conditions.Join us in making a difference through dedicated animal care!
